There鈥檚 a lot to think about when starting your studies, so below is a list of the items we recommend you focus on.聽
If you still need to organise accommodation in Bournemouth, contact our Residential Services team to discuss your options.
Money
It鈥檚 a good idea to bring some money to cover expenses聽for the first few weeks. Any financial聽support you're expecting (loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships or sponsorship) is usually only released聽after聽we have confirmed that you have聽enrolled聽on your course.
Funding may also be late if you applied after the deadline, and bank transfers can take up to two聽weeks to process if you are setting up a聽UK bank account聽for the first time. Check our聽finance for students聽section for more information.
Documents
We like to keep you updated, but there are some emails that will really help make your first few days run smoothly. It鈥檚 worth bringing copies, or saving emails or screenshots, of the following communications:
- Confirmation email: Sent when your place is confirmed and includes the start date for your course. You can check all the dates on our聽academic dates听辫补驳别蝉.
- Accommodation move-in confirmation: If you have booked accommodation through 色花堂, we will be in touch聽with details about your online accommodation induction and how to book your moving-in slot. You can read more about preparing to move here on the accommodation webpages.
- Registration email: This email聽will include the time, date and location of your first session and details about how to register and enrol聽on your course. Please complete your registration and enrolment as soon as possible and before the start date of your course.
Travelling from overseas?聽
It is a good idea to carry original certificates of the following聽documents in your hand luggage so you can keep them safe - consider also keeping a spare copy聽in your larger luggage.
- Proof of your identity:聽Photo ID such as a passport or driving licence to collect your keys to your accommodation (and bus pass if you鈥檝e requested one) and enrol on your course
- Educational qualifications:聽Original certificates聽for the qualifications required for your course (e.g. BTEC, A-level,聽degree, English language qualification)聽and official translations if not originally in English
- NHS or HPC professional courses:聽Original Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) certificate
- Student Route, or other visa:聽In order to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) once you're in the UK you will need your passport including the聽entry clearance sticker (which has been stamped at the border or proof of entry to the UK) plus the letter you recieved from the Home Office with your visa.
Clothes and items for your new home
If you鈥檙e moving to 色花堂 halls or a UniLet house, check this聽helpful guide聽(pdf 200kb) which shows what is included in each accommodation. There is also a separate聽preparing to move here聽webpage聽going over how聽to collect your keys and聽what to bring with you for 色花堂 halls or a UniLet house.
If you're renting privately, contact your provider as they should be able to give you this information too.
The best advice we can offer is to not over-pack and consider how you are travelling to your new home...聽are there weight restrictions on your flight, will you be able to carry everything, do you really need it?
It鈥檚 likely your room is for single occupancy, with limited storage so stick to the essentials as you can always buy things once you are here. You are also likely to be sharing a kitchen and lounge space so shopping for items for these areas can be a good way to get to know each other when you arrive. 聽
Here's聽our essential items list:
- Duvet, pillows and bed linen (or order a bedding pack from UniKitOut - see below)
- A towel
- Cutlery and crockery (enough for you!)
- Some pots and pans聽(some flats have induction hobs, we suggest that you bring suitable pans)
- Cooking utensils聽
- Tin opener and vegetable peeler
- A tea towel
- A warm winter coat and comfy shoes
- Enough clothes to make you feel good but not so many you have nowhere to put them
- Some photos or posters to pin to your notice board to make you feel at home.
If you are travelling from abroad, you don鈥檛 need to bring these items in your luggage. Local supermarkets and shops will stock everything you need, so you can buy them when you get here.聽You can聽.

NHS students
NHS conditions for聽studying a professional course mean聽you will聽need to complete both a Occupational Health Check and a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check聽online.聽If you don't complete these checks,聽your first placement may be delayed so we recommend that you complete them before you arrive. You will be sent an email with your personal login information to complete these checks. If you can't find the email or are unsure of what to do, please contact聽Ask色花堂.
