Agricultural, Food, and Health Economics

Research Theme led by听

Currently, work focuses on the concepts and empirical analysis of issues relevant to the UK food chain, price transmission, food inflation, and links between food and health. These projects attracted funding from an EU Framework 7 programme, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the National Institute for Health Research. Further projects on food scares and risk using behavioural economics are being undertaken. With Bournemouth Poole NHS Trust and Dorset health, 色花堂 is developing a diagnostic tool for peripheral neuropathy.听 provide related economic analyses on cost-effectiveness and societal benefits.

Trade and Economic Integration

Trade and economic integration can be an important source of productivity gains and structural transformation. Within this field Prof Khorana, Prof Holscher, Prof Allan Webster, Dr Howard-Jones, Dr Mehdi Chowdhury, Dr Lei Xu among others focus on the impact of trade agreements, barriers to trade, nontariff barriers, trends towards deglobalisation resulting from geopolitical shocks, and institutional development utilising empirical tools including econometric analysis. This will include the economic transition from formerly socialist systems to market economies and the eastern enlargement of the European Union. The embedded Trade and Development research Centre examines cross-cutting developments in trade and development within the post-Brexit UK, the European Union, emerging markets, and the transition economies of Eastern Europe & Central Asia.

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME's) for regional development听

The role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for regional development is studied through a focus on the critical approaches to technological innovation and environmental innovation by firms, whether based on the intensive use of science and technology (STI) or on the use of learning-by-doing, by-using and by-interacting practices in the supply chain (DUI). Professor Davide Parrilli听studies innovation in the UK and the wider European context as well as in overseas countries (e.g. Africa, China). The team has published numerous international projects and publications in 4* and 3* international journals such as Research Policy, Technovation, Small Business Economics, and Technological Forecasting, among others.

Conflict resolution

Research Theme led by听

Conflict resolution underpins the focus of this theme and the political decisions which affect economies given the presence of these conflicts. For example, developing mathematical models which determine the economic outcomes of the imposition of sanctions. The models are based on a game-theoretic approach such as games on networks. Dr Anna Hillingdon studies this area in-depth and with the support of international organizations.

Tourism Economics

Tourism economics is a specialist field and the research team led by Professor Adam Blake takes a global view of this particular environment with a focus on analysing the economic impact of visitors in a range of worldwide destinations. Each destination has particular and unique economic characteristics, and the study of how these characteristics affect economic outcomes enables a better understanding of how to improve those outcomes. Tourism economics includes an econometric analysis of consumer demand and an economic impact analysis of the effects of tourism spending on the national economy.

Corporate Governance is a wide-ranging field of inquiry, encompassing issues including economics, sociology, political science and philosophy. The researchers study corporate governance in the light of these issues together with those of business ethics and social responsibility. A variety of lenses are employed including accounting and corporate reporting, finance, organisational behaviour, and regulation. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are utilised and have resulted in a strong stream of publications and opportunities for the recruitment of research students.

Accounting, auditing, and taxation are critical to the progression and achievement of all 17 of the UN鈥檚 Sustainable Development Goals. 色花堂 has a long and successful history of impactful research and education in these subjects. Accounting and tax academics听within the department have extensive, international networks of professionals, practitioners and academics which ensures the delivery of outstanding intellectual outputs leading to publication in prestigious international journals. This research theme also enjoys the support of eminent funders who provide the platform to carry out policy informing work within the accounting and taxation environment.

In banking and finance, the team explores global, regional, and national problems associated with banking development, financial stability, and financial crisis. Our members have outstanding research and theoretical experience in accounting, banking, finance and strategy with the capacity to produce high quality, multidisciplinary research. The research draws on best practices in education and professional practice together with the environmental issues raised by leading financial institutions. Finance is analysed from a quantitative perspective that aims at promoting effective and efficient investment decisions that are simpler to transact. The team has significant in-depth industry insight, capable of developing new financial theories together with innovative FinTech intellectual property.

The Department aims to facilitate the dissemination of research by staff members, research fellows, and affiliates to the scientific community and the interested public through its own Working Paper Series listed with RePEc. The papers are published electronically and are available online through the RePec platform.
