She recommended the website HYPERLINK "http://www.newconversations.net"www.newconversations.net a free source of workbooks, articles & training materials to help you communicate more creatively. She also recommended the free Seven Challenges Workbook that is available on the website. It covers topics such as, expressing yourself more clearly & completely, listening more carefully, translating criticisms & complaints into requests as well as other methods to improve your communication skills. Approval of Minutes: A motion was made to approve the minutes from the April 16, 2009 meeting. The motion was seconded & the minutes were approved unanimously by all present. A motion was made & seconded to accept the Treasurers report of April 16, 2009. Motion passed unanimously. Off-Site Reports: Battle Mountain: Absent. No report. Ely: Absent. No report. Winnemucca: No report. Pahrump: Janis McCollum reported that an announcement was made June 17, 2009 that GBC Pahrump was to operate & manage the Pahrump Job Connect office effective July 1, 2009. As well as a $400,000 operating budget, GBC was awarded an American Recovery & Reinvestment 2009 Grant of $500,000 to serve industry specific students and clients involved in energy & corrections. Also awarded to GBC was a Workforce Investment Act Title 1 grant of $540,000 from the Department of Labor for students in non-corrections or non-energy programs. Committee Reports: Hospitality/ Awards: Pat Loper presented the Hospitality Report for May & June. Several get well cards were sent to classified staff as well as sympathy cards to staff who have recently lost close family members. Pat reported she is still waiting to receive the trophy for Lynnette Peterson ordered from a local Elko trophy store. Scholarship: Pat announced that the recipient of the Tony Salvaterria Scholarship for 2009-2010 is Leaf Knotts. She explained that the committee also chose two alternates, Janice Elliott & Christina Mathes in case the recipient chooses not to return to GBC as has happened in the past. Grant-In-Aid: No report. Presidents Council: Mary Gilbertson reported that President, Carl Diekhans, is requesting feedback from Classified employees regarding GBCs mission, planning & sustainability for the next 10 years. Mary invited any classified employee to voice their comments or concerns. Annie reported that President Diekhans is attending the Board of Regents meeting in Las Vegas on June 18-19, 2009. This will be Jim Rogers last meeting as Chancellor . Treasurers Report: Renae Jim gave the Treasurers report. For the period from 4/8/09 6/9/09 the current balance is $3,609.70. Renae read a thank you letter from the American Cancer Society for the $500.00 donation. Annie stated that $63,000 was raised for Relay for Life in Elko. Also, $300.00 was raised at GBC for the chemo caps & a special thanks was due to Keitha Donavan for that project. Renae introduced the new Classified Council Officers: Co-Chairs: Jolina Adams & Shirley Jones, Vice-Chair: Pat Loper, Treasurer: Renae Jim and Secretary: Janis McCollum. New Business: Mary stated that she has been approached by several people requesting donations on behalf of other individuals. Circumstances have been illness in the family, a sick child & natural occurrences such as the earthquake in Wells. She said it has always been the policy of the Classified Council to only donate to service organizations, non-profit organizations and scholarships. Mary contacted the attorney & he explained it would be an involved process to donate to individuals. A committee would have to be established to review the requests & guidelines would have to be established. Renae Jim made a motion to continue the donation policy as it is currently with donations going only to non-profits, service organizations & scholarships & Pat Loper seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Beautification Awards: Renae said that funds were still available in Elko, Pahrump & Winnemucca for beautification of the campuses. Carolyn Wahlstrom mentioned planting annuals outside of Berg Hall & Janis said Pahrump was still interested in buying benches for the front of the building. Annie Ulrich: Today is Annies last day at GBC. A pot luck luncheon was planned for immediately after the meeting in Elko. Annies parting words were for all classified employees to stay well & stay positive. The meeting was adjourned at 11:28 am.
