Approval of Minutes The minutes of the Presidents Council meeting on August 26, 2003 were approved. 2. Strategic Planning No report given. 3. Barrick Internships Gary Avent and Sean Thompson briefed Presidents Council on the Barrick internships and reported they were an astounding success. Mr. Thompson reported that his intern, Daniel Riggs, was incredibly knowledgeable about websites, and was able to perform all tasks with no questions. Mr. Riggs worked on the Foundation website, COT website, and Writing Center website. He also updated Human Resource forms, the weekly calendar; and the Alumni section. Mr. Thompson made a recommendation to bring Mr. Riggs back next year and Presidents Council agreed. Mr. Avent reported that the Librarys intern, Eric Smith, was charged with numerous projects, all completed on time and in a professional manner. Dr. Killpatrick will send a letter to Barrick extending GBCs appreciation for funding the internships and requesting that the internships continue next year. 4. Memberships for Occupational Faculty Dr. Betty Elliott reported that there are several occupational faculty who are requesting that ɫ pay for personal memberships for ACTE. In certain cases, GBC has paid for personal affiliations/memberships; however, there is not a policy in place on personal memberships to professional organizations. Nurses maintain their own licenses and are not reimbursed. Mardell Wilkins will research what the other departments are doing and report back to Presidents Council. 5. Developing a Comprehensive Evaluation System Dr. Elliott reported that her office receives much information on potential professional development opportunities. One such opportunity will be held October 13 - 15 in Atlanta, Georgia and will focus on developing a comprehensive evaluation system. The information will be faxed to Dr. Daniels to see if any faculty, particularly a member of the Faculty Evaluation Committee, would be interested in attending. 6. The Academy for Leadership Training and Development Another professional development opportunity for faculty presented by Dr. Elliott was the Academy for Leadership Training and Development. The conference is organized by the Colorado Leadership Academy in conjunction with NISOD. ɫ has had faculty attend this academy in the past (Heather Estes, BJ Payne, Karen Dannehl, Lisa Frazier). We have missed this years deadline; however, Dr. Elliott will pass the information on to Mr. Danny Gonzales and Dr. Daniels to have available for interested faculty members. Dr. Elliott will also arrange for Heather Estes to come and talk to Presidents Council about the program at a future Presidents Council meeting. 7. Natural History Room Presidents Council agreed that Dr. Mike McFarlane could temporarily use a room in the Griswold Hall to use a display area for his natural history items. Mr. Diekhans will notify Dr. McFarlane that he may proceed with the arrangements. 8. Miscellaneous The Academic Calendar presented to Presidents Council on August 26, 2003 by Dr. Frank Daniels was approved by Presidents Council. Dr. Elliott has distributed copies to the Elko County School District. Dr. Daniels reported that the NSF grant application work has been ongoing. He requested letters of support be written from the Department of Education, the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Governors office, and the Elko County School District. The letters of support are needed in one week. Dr. Daniels also requested clarification on the timeline for the Secondary Education program to get approved by the Board of Regents. Dr. Elliott said the process could take up to one year to complete. Dr. Elliott will prepare a document with the steps required for the Secondary Education program to get approval. Dr. Killpatrick reported an agenda for Chancellor Jane Nichols visit to campus on September 12 is forthcoming. Chancellor Nichols will be meeting with Faculty Senate on at 1:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. Dr. Killpatrick reported that there was a meeting with the University of Nevada, Reno Mackey School of Mines, where they discussed the possibility of a 2 + 2 program. GBC would provide the first two years to prepare the students for the School of Mines. Another topic at this meeting was the alternative energy issue. Dr. Killpatrick would like to create a partnership, with GBC providing the training at the technician level and UNR providing the more advanced training. Also discussed was Space Grant money that is currently available for students to compete in a robotics competition. Lastly, NASA scholarships are available for community college students in the amount of $2,500 each. The student, with help from a faculty mentor, would submit a proposal to UNR. Dr. McFarlane will be the primary contact for information. Dr. Killpatrick reported that there is interest in hiring a new nursing faculty in January to start another eight students in the nursing program.
