Strategic Planning Dr. Cliff Ferry provided an updated draft on the GBC Strategic Plan document. The number of goals has been reduced to four broad goals: educational programs, resources, culture, and economic and community development. Dr. Ferry will be working on determining the priorities for each of the four goals. War Hoops Dr. Killpatrick requested opinions whether GBC should advertise on War Hoops, a radio program produced by Elko High School students. It would be a good avenue to present information about registration, timelines for when applications are due, and events being held at the college. Additional information will be gathered and presented at the next Presidents Council meeting. Art Club Presentation Dr. Killpatrick introduced Ms. Mary Weldin, president of the student Art Club, and Ms. Julie Smith, Student Advocate, who both presented information on some of the projects that the Art Club would like to promote. The Art Clubs goal is to promote student and faculty art within the college and the community. One of the suggestions was a painted mural in the hallway of the Community Center, across from the Foundation office. Presidents Council suggested that instead of a mural, a panel of art would be more appropriate, which would be easier to change with the times. Since diversity will be the ongoing mural theme, the college could tie the artwork in with symposia. The Art Club will present concepts to the Memorial Committee for their recommendation to Presidents Council. The Art Club would like to begin painting during the breaks. Ms. Weldin stated that artwork from students and faculty from the other sites will be welcome. Music Series Update Mr. John Rice and Ms. Star Thomson reported that the summer music series lost money, but the losses can be covered by the theater ticket sales account. Two reasons why there was a loss were that advertising sponsorships were down, and GBC did not apply for the Arts Council Grant. The summer concert series brought over 2000 people to the campus. Professional Development Funds Mr. Carl Diekhans reviewed the three ways to fund professional development. Faculty has a small account that they accept requests for and distribute. If additional money is needed, there is a larger professional development account that is administered by the Deputy to the President. Faculty and staff can request money from this account for professional development. Professional development can also be funded out of the department funds, if approved by the Vice President for that area. It was stated that there is a policy for faculty to request funds for professional development. Presidents Council agreed that there should be procedures developed for non-teaching professionals request professional development funds, and perhaps to place limits on the number of development opportunities one person can go to per year. Presidents Council suggested refining the policy and procedure to include both professional and non-professional staff and distribute to all personnel. Vacant/Temporary Faculty Positions Update Mr. Diekhans provided a list of all of the faculty temporary or vacant positions that can be filled next year: history, nursing, Winnemucca (.6 teaching, .4 advising), computing, English, and diesel. With the three new positions, GBC has nine positions to fill next year. Computer Purchases Mr. Diekhans reported that the twenty new computers that were purchased for new faculty and replacements for the year are already gone. Computer services is finding it difficult to determine priorities on computer needs. There are another dozen computers that are being requested. Presidents Council suggested that a written request or proposal for new computers be required and sent to Jeff Cox. The proposals should be reviewed by a committee to determine an equitable distribution of the computers. Dr. Elliott requested that this topic be brought to Administrative Council for discussion and to make recommendations to Presidents Council. Computer Technician Position Description Mr. Diekhans recommended that GBC take the professional position in buildings & grounds, which is currently vacant, and move it to computer services for one year. The new job description for the Computer Services Technician was reviewed by Presidents Council. Miscellaneous Dr. Killpatrick reported Vice Chancellor Chris Chairsell has indicated that she can identify additional money to help fund the transportation of the Community College Conference participants in the spring, and to help fund the keynote speaker, Rudy Ruettiger. She feels that there will be enough of a draw from the south to consider additional funding. Ms. Mahlberg reported the new job description for the Student Financial Services Specialist has been made broader to attract a larger pool of applicants. Mr. Gonzales reported that the community of Winnemucca is interested in the timeline for the application dates for the next Reynolds Grant. They have $2.5 million in the bank and would like to try to combine that with a Reynolds Grant. The Reynolds Foundation is not accepting capital proposals for the next eighteen months. However, GBC will develop a planning group consisting of representatives from Elko, Ely, and Winnemucca to develop a proposal. Mr. Diekhans reported that there will be a strategic planning meeting in Ely on November 10, 2003. Dr. Killpatrick announced that Ms. Irma Reyes, ABE/ESL Administrative Assistant, was featured in Nevada Connections, October 2003 issue. The issue recognizes Ms. Reyess synergistic approach to success. Congratulations go out to Ms. Reyes.
