Alumni Association - Paul Killpatrick suggested that John Rice, Summer Ehrmann, Lynn Mahlberg, Chuck Briggs and he meet to discuss the creation of an Alumni Association. Ms. Mahlberg recommended Julie Smith be included as a source of information. A meeting will be scheduled. Literary Magazine Proposal John Rice introduced Mary Baker and Jeannie Long, both students working in Media Services. Jeannie Long reported that through the combined efforts of Student Central, the first issue of IDEA, a magazine featuring GBC student art work, was published last year. Ms. Long was happy to report that Mary Baker has taken over the project with the intent of creating a literary magazine that serves as an outlet for everyone to participate in and enjoy. Ms. Baker has already discussed some ideas with the English and Art departments and those departments support the idea. Ms. Baker has experience at other colleges working on literary magazines and presented her ideas to Presidents Council. Ms. Baker suggested an editorial board would be created consisting of three to five staff and students. The editorial board would select the theme. The mission statement of IDEA would tie into GBCs mission statement. She stated that works submitted would not be limited to just literary; they would want anything artistic, i.e. photograph, digital, poems, etc. For now, only students and faculty work would be accepted. However, in the future, it could be expanded to include the community. Ms. Baker reported that she has already spoken with Jeannie Rosenthal about possible grant options, and Linda Uhlenkott said the English department would help submit any grants for this project. The Presidents office has funded $500 for this project in the past. Presidents Council is in favor of this project and would like to fund 300 copies at $2,010. Dr. McFarlane indicated that he would check his accounts, but that he would be interested in funding the full amount. Miscellaneous Working with Patty Fox, Dr. Killpatrick held a student art work contest to determine the GBC Holiday Card design. The art student chosen from entries submitted to Patty Fox was Jacki Alexander. The winner will have her card reproduced and receive a $100 gift certificate from the GBC bookstore. Dr. Killpatrick stated that Mark Chilton, one of the founders of GBC, has invented the Ready Ball. He is willing to split half the profits with the College if we can come up with a marketing plan. Julie Smith will call him and see if it fits into our SGA entrepreneurial programs. Lynn Mahlberg reported that Mary Winter, Pat Anderson, Erik Seastedt, Joe Johnston, Phil Smith, Jeanne Rosenthal, Jennifer Nachiondo, and Lynn Mahlberg have been talking about creating a student health organization. They would first like to create an online information center and eventually a student health resource center where students could go for referrals and information. She reported that another group is partnering with PACE for grants to help fund more drug and alcohol awareness programs pertaining peer pressure. John Rice reported that new faculty and new programs will be the feature for the next College News. He also wants to do some profiles of some students who are doing amazing things. Danny Gonzales reported that the Hispanic Advisory Committee met yesterday. The committee is looking at a certificate program for interpreter/translator. The College will have to see if this is what the community needs. The program would have to be approved by Curriculum and Articulation. John Rice reported that the final financial report for the Great Basin Festival has been completed. The festival did very well this year. The planning committee is reviewing some new strategies for the future. The committee would like to plan the festival around the upper division integrated seminars so that events scheduled for that week would supplement what faculty has already planned. These new strategies will be formalized and taken to the department chairs for their input. Erik Seastedt reported that the Human Resource website will be available next week. He stated that anything related to policy will be linked to the Office of the Presidents website, and recommended all links on all GBC web pages referencing policy be linked to the Office of the Presidents website. An invitation will go to Laura Gallegos and Sean Thompson to further address the policy and procedure manual and website links at the November 16 Presidents Council meeting.
