Strategic Planning Dr. Cliff Ferry updated Presidents Council on the Strategic Planning document. He reported that the overall goal is to continue building on GBCs strengths. Each of the four goals will have a description of where GBC is at with that goal and will provide a good introduction to the objective. Dr. Ferry is still conducting meetings to gather information. FIPSE Mr. Danny Gonzales reported that the FIPSE grant proposal was submitted yesterday. The focus of the grant proposal is the concept of a leadership institute for community colleges considering implementing bachelor degrees. There would be three tracks: higher education policy, administrators, and faculty. There is also the possibility of hiring a consultant to help coordinate the project. Emergency Disaster Plan Ms. Pat Anderson, Director of Safety and Security, reported on GBCs Emergency Disaster Plan. Ms. Anderson stated that there has been ongoing training with faculty and at the dorms about emergency procedures. One of the things that she concentrates her training on is the possibility of a domestic violence occurrence. She recommended looking into putting in some sort of building to building communications or wireless communication. Ms. Anderson reported that there will be fire drills occurring in the next two weeks. On November 22, she will be conducting a training session, Shelter Within, at the Child Center. Presidents Council recommended that safety bulletins be sent out on a weekly basis to increase faculty awareness about safety issues. Housing Coordinator Draft Presidents Council reviewed a draft position description for the Housing Coordinator. Presidents Council recommended that the Housing Coordinator be required to live no more than ten minutes from campus. Mr. Gonzales stated that an onsite Housing Coordinator could be more proactive. The candidates will have to undergo a background check before being hired. Another draft will be presented to Presidents Council next week for approval. UCCSN Master Plan Goal #5 Ms. Lynn Mahlberg reported that at the P16 meeting last week, Tyler Trevor provided information on the presentations to be held at the Board of Regents Meeting in December. It will be a joint meeting with the Nevada Department of Education. We should look at GBCs partnerships with the school districts, English and history, Tech Prep, and faculty sitting on the Teacher Education Committee. Employment Opportunity Policy Ms. Lynn Mahlberg provided an update of the Employment Opportunity Policy. Presidents Council recommended some additional changes. The policy states that references checks should be before the interview, but does not exclude the President or VP to conduct additional reference checks. Ms. Mahlberg will bring back to Presidents Council next week for approval. Public Lands Project Report Ms. Mahlberg introduced Michele Urain, a BAIPS student. Ms. Urain presented information on the Public Lands Project - Water Canyon Interpretive Trail. She started work this summer on this project, which she is doing as her internship for the BAIPS program. She is coordinating work on the first ten sites and will be putting together lesson plans for each site for local schools. She is preparing a booklet which contains information on each site that will be available at the Chamber of Commerce. When the booklet is completed she will provide Presidents Council with a copy. Miscellaneous Presidents Council reviewed the position descriptions to be included in the Chronicle. It was suggested to list only to position names to save costs, and referring to our website for the descriptions. Dr. Elliott recommended that there should be a CRJ instructor with background in social work listed. Presidents Council also agreed that the Vice President for Academic Affairs should be a separate advertisement, and that it should require a terminal degree to maintain the status of the position within the system. President Killpatrick will respond to the System that Presidents Council does not support the MFA. The System is requesting nominations for an Unsung Student Award. Mr. Gonzales will contact Mr. Stan Popeck for suggestions for a vocational student to nominate.
