Strategic Planning No report. Office Space Presidents Council discussed the need for more office space. GBC currently needs an additional eight offices. Presidents Council discussed some options available. Dr. Killpatrick will tour the campus along with other members of Presidents Council to come up with a solution. Item will be brought back to Presidents Council. Sound System Purchase Request Mr. John Rice requested approval to purchase a sound system in the amount of $16,400. Currently, the college is renting the sound system for events. Purchasing a sound system would save substantial money by not having to rent equipment. Additionally, having a top of the line sound system would increase student interest and participation in college productions. HR Search Process Ms. Linda Carter provided information on an HR software program that System HR directors recommended the System purchase and split the costs between the institutions. The program would enable applicants to apply for a position on-line, allowing the applicant to submit any documentation on-line as well. The hiring committee would be given a password to access the information about the applicants and to make their ratings on-line. The program could potentially turn the hiring process into a paperless process. The program can also be customized for each institution. Ms. Carter reported the purchase of the software program is still in the negotiating stages, and she will keep Presidents Council informed. Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee Update Mr. Gary Avent updated Presidents Council on the Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee, which he is a member. The Government Affairs Committee meets twice a month to discuss various issues that would affect the city. The Committee then makes recommendations to the County Commissioners. Recently, the Committee reviewed the Patriot Act and the proposed increase in gas tax. Grant Update Dr. Killpatrick signed a letter of support to the Western Folk Life Center for the Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The Western Folk Life Center did support the Foundation dinner this year. Ms. Rosenthal reported on the grant proposal in progress. GBC will be notified by the end of June if we receive the Title III grant. GBC is competing against 309 institutions for the Title III grant. She reported that a grant proposal to the State Energy Office and U.S. Department of Energy will be submitted on our behalf by the state. The grant for $150,000 will help establish an Industrial Energy Efficiency degree program with TMCC, WNCC, and CCSN). The state will re-grant it back to GBC from the federal government should we receive the grant. Ms. Rosenthal is still working on the Nevada Arts Council grant for $6,000 to help fund the 2004 Great Basin Festival. Ms. Rosenthal reported that she and Danny Gonzales are the GBC representatives for the Indoor Recreational Facility Committee. She reported that the committee is considering getting some small loans to enable them to get into the facility soon. However, any grants that they receive can not pay for loans that are outstanding. Community College Conference Dr. Killpatricks Role Dr. Betty Elliott reported that the Steering Committee for the Community College Conference is meeting weekly now. Dr. Killpatrick will provide the welcoming address on April 16. Mr. Stan Aiazzi will be the master of ceremonies at the dinner on April 17. The conference has 45 registered from TMCC and 20 registered from WNCC. College Goal Sunday Ms. Lynn Mahlberg reported that all the institutions in Nevada are now on-board. The College Goal Sunday has been scheduled for February 13, 2005, and they have 6 7 sites available. She reported that a Request for Proposal is being prepared to hire a marketing firm that will represent the rural areas as well as the urban areas. ABE/ESL Request Ms. Mahlberg reported that the ABE/ESL program is requesting a fundraiser to benefit their end of year graduation ceremony. They want to host a Chili Con Carne competition on May 5, which would be held in conjunction with Cinco De Mayo. Presidents Council approved and recommended Ms. Reyes contact the Foundation to coordinate efforts. Career Fair Credit Course Incentive Ms. Mahlberg requested that GBC sponsor one 3 credit course to be apart of the drawing at the Career Fair, which will be held on April 7, 2004. Presidents Council approved. Presidential Scholarships Ms. Mahlberg reported that ten Presidential Scholarships will be awarded this year. Last year we awarded six out of the ten scholarships. The scholarships went to VICA, FBLA/PBL, and FFA. This year GBC wants to include FCCLA (FHA), FTA, and NASC. GBC is targeting students in high school with leadership qualities. The applicants must have a 3.5 GPA to apply and maintain a 2.5 GPA. Miscellaneous Mr. Diekhans reported that GBCs Electrical Technology Building has a good chance of being funded. GBC is requesting an additional $200,000 for the planning of the new addition to the Health Center (Fitness Center). Ms. Mahlberg reported that she, Phil Smith and Julie Baumann attended a meeting with PACE where they learned of a national movement, Question, Persuade, Response (QPR), that provides training in the prevention of suicide. Nevada is number one in the number of suicides mostly young males between fifteen and nineteen year olds. She would like to see the training on-campus. GBC summer hours will be 7 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. The summer office hours pertain to all offices and will begin on June 1, 2004 and end on July 30, 2004.
