Annual Working Plan for the Strategic Plan Dr. Cliff Ferry presented a draft of the 2004/2005 GBC Action Plan which will list the Strategic Plan objective, the responsible person, target completion date, and status. The action plan will allow us to follow through with the objectives stated in the Strategic Plan. The tracking of the progress will be done by Danny Gonzales office. Dr. Ferry requested that Presidents Council look at the objectives that fall in their area and determine the priority, who is responsible, and what the target completion dates are so that he can prepare an Action Plan timeline. Please have this information available for discussion at the Presidents Council meeting on August 17. Shakespearean Theater Troupe Jeannie Rosenthal presented a request from Sarah Sweetwater asking permission to approach Wal-Mart for a donation for the Great Basin Festival. The request would have to go through the Foundation office. Ms. Rosenthal reported that the Western Folk Life Center has been working with the Nevada Council and the Sierra Arts Council to bring a nationally know theater troupe to northern Nevada through a grant from WESTAF. The Artist Repertory Theater will be traveling through Elko November 12-15 and will be providing educational outreach to students in grades 3-12 and community members through performances and workshops involving Shakespeares A Mid Summer Nights Dream. A documentary movie will also be made during this time. GBC would have to commit to paying them $1,500 and provide them with 16 rooms for 3 nights (no charge to them), as well as market the program (approx. $1,500). Presidents Council agreed that it would be a wonderful opportunity for students and the public, except for the cost, and gave Ms. Rosenthal permission to move forward but dont commit the College. Ms. Rosenthal and John Rice will meet to talk further about the details, and to see if we can get more community support and support from the school district. Stan Popecks Emeritus Status Presidents Council chose a photograph of Stan Popeck to be placed on the Emeritus wall. Department Communications with Student Services on New Majors Dr. Mike McFarlane brought forth a concern about departments not knowing that a student has declared a major that falls under their department. Presidents Council agreed that the process of notifying departments about students who have declared a degree needs to be formalized. Committee Organization Dr. McFarlanes office has created a draft flow sheet of the GBC Committees showing the recommended lines of communication between other committees. Please review the draft and make any changes. The item will be brought back to Presidents Council for discussion on August 17. PC Members Visiting Department Meetings Dr. McFarlane proposed that Presidents Council adopt a policy that all members of Presidents Council meet at least once each year with each GBC academic department (Business, COT, Elementary Education, English, Fine Arts, Math, Nursing, Occupational Education, Science, and Social Sciences/Humanities). Meetings should be scheduled with departments as part of regular department meetings. The purpose of the meetings would be for faculty and administration to express any concerns they may have to one another and to foster better communication within the GBC organization. Presidents Council approved the proposal. Great Basin Indian Archival Center Danny Gonzales reported the Barrick intern Eric Smith has been working on the Great Basin Indian Archival draft website. The website will be available soon for faculty review. Fall In-service Calendar Mr. Gonzales discussed the in-service calendar. For the open house faculty advisement on August 19, only a couple of faculty members are actually needed there; however, faculty needs to be available in their offices for student consultations. There will also be a live radio remote during open house. Handbooks for Adjunct Faculty and Satellite Center Coordinators Mr. Gonzales stated that the handbooks for the Adjunct Faculty and Satellite Center Coordinators are being updated and almost completed. He will have them out for review next week. Changes to the Affirmative Action Plan Erik Seastedt reported on some minor language changes in the Affirmative Action Plan. The Human Resource Director will now be responsible for providing affirmative action training to all members of hiring committees prior to bringing applicants in for the interview. Because of the training, it will no longer be necessary to read the affirmative action statement at the beginning of the interview, or have an affirmative action officer present during the interview. Marketing the Strategic Plan John Rice presented the draft document of the GBC Marketing Plan for 2004-2005. Mr. Rice stated that the plan includes all of the messages that GBC would like to communicate through public information and advertising for next year. He briefed PC about the contents. The first part of the plan is GBCs promise, which is our mission statement. Using the word promise presents a sense of commitment from GBC to our area. The marketing plan is directly related to our strategic plan. Mr. Rice reported that print ads and radio spots have already begun as a part of the marketing plan. GBCs brochures are being redesigned, and consultant Jeremy Lord is working on a proposal for GBC that addresses updating GBCs image, recruiting, and general packaging and positioning an institution like GBC locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Mr. Rice provided copies of ads that are currently running in our service area. Mr. Rice is working on a fun class schedule to be included in the first issue of the College News this fall as a way to promote the community service classes. He reported that the Elko Daily Free Press is interested in sponsoring some community service classes, and they have prepared a survey to their subscribers to see what people want. GBC will compile the survey and work with the Free Press. Mr. Rice reported that we are partnering with Nevada Magazine for an advertisement to be placed in a supplement to the Nevada Business Journal which ECEDA mails out regionally. Foundation Retreat Summer Ehrmann reported a venue change for the Foundation retreat on Friday, August 6. The retreat will be at the Newmont Executive home located on Juniper Street. Miscellaneous Presidents Council congratulating Dr. Killpatrick on his Alpha Award he received last week at the Job Corps Hall of Fame Ceremony in Washington D.C. Dr. Killpatrick was also congratulated at the Elko County Commissioners meeting on August 4. Ms. Mahlberg reported that GBC has 738 FTE, up 24 FTE from last year. She is still concerned about the headcount, which is lowest in the undeclared degree areas. Mr. Seastedt updated Presidents Council on the Fair Labor Act changes. He has distributed information to supervisors regarding evaluating non-teaching faculty. He is anticipating that some adjustments will have to be made. Mr. Gonzales and Dr. McFarlane met with the classified staff to update them on the new break room. The Academic Affairs support group received a full days training on updated policies and procedures from the Controllers office. Dr. Killpatrick stated that he is very pleased with GBC management team; he feels good about his administrative team and looks for great things in the future.
