Strategic Planning – No report. Sound System – Paul Killpatrick received a request from John Rice to purchase a sound system for the Summer Concert Series. Sound equipment is currently rented for the concerts at a cost of $3500. Carl noted that money could be loaned from a soft account and repaid from concert proceeds. Career Fair – Tammy Staley gave a report on the Career Fair to be held Wednesday, April 16th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration will be in the Solarium, booths will be set up in the Fitness Center, and lunch will be served in Cafщ X. The guest speaker, Mr. James Malinchak, will make a presentation on networking and making the transition from college to the “real” world. He will also talk to the employers about networking with other community members and how they might to be able to use this as professional development for their employees. Tammy asked President’s Council to help spread the word about the Career Fair. Betty Elliott will send an e-mail to faculty asking them to encourage their students to attend and Paul will see if Tammy can talk about the event on “Elko Live.” Professional Development Activities – Lisa Frazier gave a report on the faculty workshops she had done from August 2000 to the present. In addition to the classes she offers on the Elko campus, she makes frequent trips to Winnemucca, Battle Mountain and Ely to offer classes at those sites. She does Web CT orientations for students at the off-campus sites and works with students on electronic portfolios. Lisa also reviewed the results of a survey she sent to faculty regarding professional development workshops. Lisa noted that she and Heather Estes would be doing a leadership workshop on Friday, April 11th at 11 a.m. in Health Sciences 108. The workshop is designed for people who supervise faculty, staff, or student workers. Paul stated that he would like Betty to establish a committee to plan professional development activities with representatives from Student Services, faculty, and President’s Council to address HR policies, safety in the workforce, sexual harassment issues, and technology issues. Grants Update – Jeannie Rosenthal reported that she had been working on grant proposals to the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Commission on Tourism for the Great Basin Festival. The Nevada Works project with NYTC will be postponed until a required 16-hour training program on the recruitment and tracking of program participants can be completed. Paul will check with Nevada Works on this requirement. Jeannie and Frank Daniels have been working on a National Science Foundation grant proposal. A meeting will be held with faculty to determine support and invite input. The RFP addresses how to get K-12 teachers into the areas of science and math and to stay in those areas. The initial proposal is due May 19th and the full proposal on September 10th. The purpose of NSF grants is to develop models that can be shared with other institutions. Paul stated that he attended a session at the AACC conference presented by the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Vocational Adult Education who talked about the status of a number of initiatives. She reported that the program to replace Perkins would be called the Technical and Secondary Excellence Program and is expected to be funded for $1 billion. The governors will decide if there will be money for secondary or post-secondary. She talked about PELL grants, special education, and the need to move money for academic support. Paul asked her whether Perkins dollars would be used to fund PELL grants and she responded that rather than using Perkins money, they would be coming up with another program. Miscellaneous Carl gave a brief update on the budget. He noted that GBC’s projected FTE was adjusted to 1278 and 1293 for the next two years. Headcount was set at 2779 for the period. Paul announced that there would be an informal “Presidential Chat” on Friday with faculty and staff. Three positions will be advertised – mathematics instructor, education instructor, and library director. All positions are contingent upon funding.
