Strategic Planning Dr. Paul Killpatrick reported that the strategic plan is almost finished. A campus forum will be planned soon to establish priorities and receive comments on the plan. The report must be completed by May 4, 2004 to be presented at the June Board of Regents meeting in Elko. Letter from the President Dr. Killpatrick requested comments on his letter from the President to be included in the 2004/2005 ɫ Catalog. Presidents Council suggested some minor changes, which will be implemented and sent to Media Services. GBC Community Service Awards Dr. Killpatrick requested Presidents Council to think about nominations for the GBC Community Service Award. Presidents Council will review who the past recipients were and be thinking of worthy candidates. Community College Conference Update Dr. Betty Elliott reported ongoing progress in the planning of the Community College Conference on April 16 and 17, 2004. This years conference will have twelve vendors. The keynote speaker, Rudy Ruettiger, will speak at a morning session specifically for students and community sponsors. At 1:00 p.m. Dr. Killpatrick will provide the welcome address for the conference and introduce Rudy Ruettiger, who will entertain the participants with a motivational presentation. Library Summer Hours Dr. Elliott presented a request from the Library to have a variance from the summer hours. The Library will stagger their employees (as they have always done during the summer) to stay open longer to accommodate students taking summer classes. Presidents Council approved that the Library summer hours should be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Silver Stage Quilters Guild Letter Mr. Carl Diekhans shared a letter from the Silver Stage Quilter Guild stating their appreciation of the use of our facility for the Quilt Show. The Quilt Show was a very successful event which brought a great deal of people to the campus. The Silver Stage Quilters Guild paid for the use of the facility and for security, and they provided a certificate of insurance. The Guild would like to have their event on-campus when they host it again in spring 2006. Modular Trailers in Battle Mountain and Winnemucca Mr. Diekhans has been working closely with Steve Larsgaard, Lander County School District Superintendent, to work out an agreement in which the school district will give GBC two modular trailers that are not being used by Lander County to GBC, providing GBC pays for all costs of moving the modular trailers and final set-up. Mr. Larsgaard will take this request to their school board meeting tomorrow. If approved, one modular will remain in Battle Mountain and would be partially used by the ABE/ESL program; the other modular would be moved to Winnemucca. Cell Phone Policy Mr. Diekhans reported that a new cell phone policy will soon take affect. The new policy states that GBC will be reimbursed $.35 for every incoming or outgoing personal phone call that falls under the free minutes on a college-owned cell phone. All other personal phone calls will be reimbursed at the rate of the actual call. Event Insurance Issue Mr. Diekhans reported that he is still gathering information regarding event insurance. Miscellaneous The Legislative Breakfast Meeting that GBC has been trying to put together has been put on hold until the first part of November. The NCHEMS report was discussed again. Mr. Carl Diekhans will create a power point presentation and share the information with faculty during the Faculty Senate meeting on May 14, 2004. He will ask that Dr. Garry Heberer be present to help disseminate the information. Dr. Killpatrick announced that Elko County Assistant District Attorney Rob Lowe has agreed to be the commencement speaker during this years graduation ceremony on May 21, 2004. The Yucca Mountain Repository will be the subject of a debate scheduled for April 21, 2004 at 7 p.m. in the GBC Theater. Ms. Mahlberg announced that the GBC Career Fair will be held in the Fitness Center on April 7, 2004. There will be over 30 vendors from all over the state, where students/attendees will be to network, make valuable contacts, and have important job related questions answered. All students and GBC faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Dr. Daniels reported some concerns brought up at the last Faculty Senate meeting regarding emergency medical procedures, citing an incident where a student had a seizure in the classroom. All of the emergency procedures were followed in this case, but Presidents Council thought it necessary that Pat Anderson again schedule more safety training classes. Dr. Daniels reported that Faculty Senate approved the BAIPS Arts and Humanities degree; they also approved a recommendation for faculty at the top of the pay scale. He reported that there were some concerns about the content of a couple of Agriculture courses that might preclude them from being three credit courses. Dr. Daniels noted it was his last Faculty Senate meeting as chair. He is preparing a list of important things to do to pass on to the new Faculty Senate Chair, Kathy Schwandt. The list will include important information about timelines, tenure recommendations, Regents awards, etc., and should help provide a smooth transition. Dr. Killpatrick stated that having Dr. Daniels participate on Presidents Council this year has been positive and informative. He has set a nice precedence that Presidents Council would like to see continued. Dr. Killpatrick reported that he is arranging for legal representatives from the UNLV Law School to attend the next Native American Advisory Board Meeting (via IAV) to help with legal advice. The Te-Moak tribe would like to amend their constitution to implement staggering terms. Miss Nevada will be on campus on Wednesday, April 14 to speak out against domestic violence. She is hosted by PACE coalition. Dr. Killpatrick was involved in a telephone conference with Colorado State University about their Fire Science Program, which has approximately 200 students. Colorado State will not be offering the Fire Science Program in the future, and basically is looking for another institution to take over the program. Mr. Gonzales reported that the second annual Taste of Elko was a great success. A total amount of $7,920 was raised for international student. The event was co-sponsored by the College and Rotary club. Dr. Killpatrick gave special recognition and thanks to GBC staff who participated in the Take Pride Community Clean-up day held on April 3. Those who participated were Mardell Wilkins, Danny Gonzales, Yvonne Sutherland, Bob Dallaire, Carl Diekhans, Betty Elliott, Russ Hammons, and Wendy Ramirez. The Social Science department has voiced concern about the advertisement of the criminal justice position. Administration met with the department chair to discuss the position description for the advertisement; however, that information was not shared with the personnel committee.
