Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported the senate has decided to pull together and hunker down. Frank has been monitoring proposals going on at the system including salary comps. He is trying to make some sense out of all of it. The next Faculty Senate meeting is scheduled for March 19, 2010. Frank reported the senate chairs are looking at what they can propose as a solution. They are looking at how education can solve some of the problems in our state. How can we get businesses here? Economic development is important to the future of this state. Locally, ECEDA has not effectively supported education in recent weeks like the development authorities in Reno and Las Vegas. Classified Council Update Shirley Jones reported that Classified Council is looking at doing a fundraiser that will be different from anything they have ever done. She advised Classified Council at their last meeting that they would not be participating in the system wide ad hoc committee; but given what has recently happen with the budget, they will probably continue to participate. Other institutions are seriously looking at changing their systems from the classified employee system to the NSHE state employee system. There is another meeting of this ad hoc committee on Thursday. It is always good to see what the other institutions are doing and how they feel about things. SGA Update Paulette Batayola reported that students across the state have done a wonderful job during rallies held across the state supporting higher education. The student rally held at GBC had a great student turnout. Lynn Mahlberg stated there were wonderful student speakers at the rally, and it was well attended. Paulette said the new focus is to get students to register to vote. Paulette said the Nevada Student Alliance will have a huge turnover coming up. Paulette says it will be interesting to see what the new leadership will be. She reported that Trevor Sneed is the new SGA senator on the Elko campus. Elys new senator is Theresa Pearce. The SGA elections are coming up. The elections end on April 30. She plans to run for president again. John Rice would like to do a story on all of the senators and asked Paulette to get him bios of everyone. SGA is hosting s spring costume party on March 17 from 9:00 pm to midnight at the GBC Fitness Center. The students are anxiously awaiting the grand opening of the newly remodeled student union. Scheduling of Course Schedule Deadlines in iNtegrate Mike McFarlane announced that the deadline for course schedules to be in SIS to go live needs to be the same for all the colleges. Lynn Mahlberg will get that deadline out to everyone. Some of our business practices have to change to match with the system. Distinguished Alumni Award Mardell Wilkins will send the guidelines to Mike McFarlane to send out to faculty. The due date will be April 15. Community Service Award The list of the prior community service recipients will be reviewed to determine who should be nominated for this years award. Difficult to Recruit List 2010 - The NSHE Difficult to Recruit list has been distributed to all human resource advisors and faculty senate chairs to review. Both Sonja Sibert and Frank Daniels have reviewed the list and recommend no changes, deletions or additions. Positions deemed difficult to recruit are placed on this list authorizing a higher salary to attract applicants. GBC is not recruiting for any positions on the list. Miscellaneous Mike McFarlane reported the Regents did not change any policy regarding exigency at the recent Board of Regents meeting. The Regents preferred to keep exigency out because of accreditation. In the future, the Regents may look at wording to address issues such as pay cuts without exigency. Mike reported the budget cuts to GBC will be 6.9% on top of what we already have cut. The 6.9% budget cut is effective for the remainder of this fiscal year from March 1 to June 31, 2010 and for fiscal year 2011 beginning July 1, 2010 to June 31, 2011. There is potential for more cuts to come later this calendar year. The GBC Budget Task Force will meet on March 11 to review numbers and start making recommendations to administration. Most importantly we must focus on our strengths and preserve the core of what we do. Mike McFarlane emphasized that nothing has been finalized regarding the four ten work week. The only thing we know for sure is that the furlough carries over to FY 11. We need to continue to schedule things as we normally do until otherwise notified. There are a set of fees that was circulated with instructions to respond if you think we should change or eliminate some or all of them. In order to make a decision we need to know what the actual savings would be if we eliminate these fees. All the fees are pretty small except for the distance ed fee and the grant in aid fee. The system office is looking at a proposal to change the credits required for a bachelors degree to 120 credits maximum. They are talking about this now. The president at each institution would have to approve to go beyond the 120 credit max. Lynn Mahlberg reported the dinner auction for Mary Licht (GBC Welding Technology Professor Jon Lichts wife) that was held this week was very successful. GBC provided a gift basket. All of us at GBC are hoping for Marys full recovery. Lynn Mahlberg asked everyone to begin thinking about the cultural diversity report that we have to present at the June Board of Regents meeting. We would like to focus on student success stories. John Rice reported Newmont pledge $300,000 for the Endowment for New Programs. In response the GBC Foundation offered that if we could not raise the rest of the dollars needed then we would return their donation. We need raise our match by June 30, 2010. Over $60,000 was raised at the dinner dance alone. We are at $800,000 now and half way to our goal. John is confident that we will meet that goal. We are grateful to Newmont, Barrick, and all the donors that stepped up to the plate. John Rice has been submitted an application for appropriations from Senator Reids of for the Stage 2 Geothermal Project. We will be receiving $1 million for the 1st phase of the project in a few weeks. The second phase of the project is $7.5 million. John is also working on a $1.5 million appropriation that focuses on Jobs for the Next Decade. The money will help support programs and training for the top ten occupations identified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that would be most beneficial for rural Nevada.
