Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported he hopes for a resolution for the INT 100 at this Fridays Faculty Senate meeting. The faculty are close to a consensus. The system is looking into the feasibility of replacing the step schedule with a merit based system. Mike says our current evaluation system would work with a merit system. There are arguments for and against merit versus salary ranges. Classified Council Update Shirley Jones reported that Classified has discussed participating with SGA to become more involved with students on campus. They have invited SGA president Paulette Batayola to attend a meeting in January. Winnemucca Classified staff are involved with their students. Classified staff have questioned why vending machines are always empty. Carl reported that the vendor is out of business and we are in the process of trying to get another vendor. We do not know if we can confiscate the machines. The trouble is finding a company that will only do the food. The drinks are an extended contract with Pepsi. Shirley reported that she and Jolina Adams are serving on an ad hoc committee formed by NSHE that will look at the classified system under state employment (as GBC is currently) versus NSHE state employee. DRI is not part of the state system; their support staff is part of their regular employees. SGA Update Paulette Batayola reported that the Skills USA will have a float entry for the Snow Flake parade. SGA participated in Christmas in the Nighttime Sky. Lynn commended the students for a job well done. Paulette wished everyone a happy and safe holiday. Miscellaneous Fridays budget meeting with the Chancellor and his staff is on. Chancellor Klaich has assured us that the meeting will be at the same level as with the other institutions. We are currently working on a Power Point presentation. We will have three different levels of requests for FY 2011-2012: one at $592 million; one at more than $592 million; and one at less than $592 million. One of the things we are asking in all three scenarios is to eliminate the furloughs. Shirley Jones stated the classified didnt really object to the furloughs per say, but that they cant choose their day off or combine them. Carl said the state classified system has rules that we have to follow. There are a lot of bureaucratic things involved. None of the institutions wanted to do it the way the state mandated. Carl Diekhans reported that NSHE is not asking the institutions for a plan (at this time) addressing the governors request for budget cuts. The governor has the ability to use the line of credit of $150 million. He could draw $50 million from the line of credit so it wouldnt affect any state agency. Carl Diekhans reported his self evaluation is due to the Chancellor on Monday, so he will be working on that report. Lynn Mahlberg reminded PC that Monday night at 10:00 p.m. we will be cooking breakfast at Griswold Hall. This has become an annual tradition for both spring and fall to feed the students studying for finals. Generally, we have between 60-70 students show up for the breakfast. Sonja Sibert reported that some people are disregarding purchasing rules and regulations and creating DPOs after the fact. This is a major violation of purchasing regulations. She will address the issue with the offenders, but wants to remind ALL employees that DPOs must be filled out prior to the purchase. If you have any questions contact the Controllers Office. The Presidents Council meeting on December 22 has been cancelled. The next Presidents Council meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2010.
