Student Email Accounts Jeff Cox reported on information received since the last meeting on the issue of student email accounts and there is no clear cut answer. He has researched other academic email policies. The policies in other states he has researched state that the communication is done only through the college provided email address. Many colleges/universities want a sense of community and use student Rebel Mail or Badger Mail or Aggie Mail. We could have a Bighorn Mail for a sense of community. Jeff said that the Student Government Association has been consulted on the issue. They would like for GBC to continue to supply students with a Gmail account, HYPERLINK "mailto:student@gbcnv.edu" student@gbcnv.edu. They have requested the email name for Gmail and WebCampus and computer access remain the same. Paulette said students like the idea of being assigned email addresses and it being Big Horn mail. It is also easier for college communication if the college generates the email address. It is still the students responsibility to retrieve their email. Presidents Council recommended that we go to Bighorn Mail using Gmail and that we would generate the email addresses. Strategic Plan Cliff Ferry gave a brief update on strategic planning. The department plans are about 80% online. There is no progress yet in the institutional area. The steering committee meets next week. Looking into what kind of reports we can put together. The process is coming together well. Frank Daniels agrees the process has gone smoothly and loves the web interface. IAV Policy Frank Daniels reported the Senate approved the policy in April. The policy details accurately the IAV process. Mike has reviewed it and said that it accurately reflects what is currently being done. We will need to look at how fees are charge and distributed for the hybrid classes. Presidents Council approved the IAV policy. Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported the last Faculty Senate meeting was just a general meeting. Committees are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Nothing really to report. Mike says he realizes how hard faculty are working and we really appreciate it. Carl says there is no talk yet of a special session. Faculty Representation by Minority Groups This is a report that Frank Daniels has put together. It was emailed to everyone. Please read it. It has some great information. It ame about after some things that were said at the BOR meeting in September. The report shows that positions have their own demographic spread. The hypothesis if a group is reasonably represented in the community then you get the demographic for the position. It matches the community. Looked at some of the things that other colleges are doing for recruitment and are not doing well in recruiting African Americans and Hispanics it is because of the discipline that they are recruiting for. Lynn asked if she could send the report to Vice Chancellor Jane Nichols and Assistant Vice Chancellor Crystal Abba. Frank said we could circulate the report as needed. Student Employment Services Policy The policy has changed. The rate of pay for student workers is now $10 per hour for all student workers. It is a competitive wage and makes things easier. Presidents Council approved the policy. Classified Council Update Shirley Jones brought up the concerns that classified are not attending meetings and the claim that they are just too busy. She invited Carl to attend a meeting to offer up support. Carl says that we have always had attendance problems in this area. He encouraged the Vice Presidents and the Directors to encourage their employees to attend classified meetings. The next classified meeting is November 19. SGA Update Paulette Batayola said the SGA activities are still getting impressive numbers for participation. Events are bringing in over 300 participants each time. Students participated in the forums over student housing which was impressive because they were scheduled on heavy class days. The student concerns will be addressed. The outlying campuses are holding concurrent events to the main campus. Paulette appreciated the support of everyone. Carl says it can be attributed to Paulettes great leadership. The next SOL meeting is on November 23. Contracts/Agreements NSHE Requirements Copies of the NSHE requirements for Contracts/Agreements were distributed. We all need to know limits, insurance requirements, etc., to make BCN happy. We will have to have diligence. Miscellaneous The Chancellor has requested a budget meeting to discuss the next biennium. The meeting is scheduled for December 11 in Winnemucca. It will be a 3 to 4 hour meeting for presentation and tour. Please make this date available. We will put together a Powerpoint presentation on what we would like to bring forward at the next legislative session. Lynn Mahlberg reported that the new Recruiter/Advisor for Pahrump, Jeff Peters, was on the road recruiting within 48 after filling out his new hire paperwork. He has hit the ground running. Paulette says the committee really made the right choice; Jeff is very approachable. Mike McFarlane announced that the new Pahrump Valley Center Manager is Diane Wrightman. She will start November 23 and comes to us from CSN. Mardell Wilkins announced the Staff Holiday party is scheduled for December 18, 2009. More details will follow.
