Conceptual Sign Package Pat Anderson introduced Mark Butler of Lytle Signs from Idaho. Also in attendance was the budget & facilities committee. Mark toured the facility and put together a package that would provide more uniformity to the signage at GBC. We can mix and match. GBC was given a price list and design example. The company can also design an electric sign for the front of the campus that utilizes Watchfire software. GBC Foundation Employee Campaign Patty Jones announced this years GBC Foundation Employee Campaign is underway. Last year 34% of employees participated. This year the Foundation would like to get 100% participation. Participation is the key, not necessarily the amount donation. A one- time donation constitutes participation. Distance Learning Systems Outages John Rice reported that a couple of weeks ago we had a system outage of IAV and online learning and networks in Pahrump. Breakdown was with Comcast and not with our system. However, it became a problem for us. We did not have a procedure of notifying students of the outage and giving them options of what to do. Because of this incident a procedure has been put into place on how to respond to such emergencies. John said it was determined that the best thing to do if there is an outage is to immediately post an announcement on the GBC web page. If outage lasts more than an hour, send out twitter messages and change the phone message at the GBC help desk. At the same time if the outage affects a specific campus, that campus would change their voice message at the main line that an outage has occurred. If outage lasts more than three hours then the students will be notified directly. We are also looking into renewing the Blackboard license ($10,000 per year). We will also be working closely with SCS so that communication between us will be better. Lisa Frazier, Susana Dorr, and Jeff Cox are looking at every possible way of notifying students and a follow up to students after an outage has been corrected. We will also have people on call in the future. A procedure will be created to address these outages that will become a part of the emergency procedures. Capacity Building for Volunteer-ism Julie Smith and Lynn Mahlberg reported that Erin Murray is our VISTA employee. GBC does not pay for her salary; AmeriCorps picks up her salary. Erins responsibility is to match up programs with opportunities for students. An example was the breast cancer walk this weekend. There are volunteer opportunities at the other sites as well. She is working with the student clubs to match opportunities within the community. Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported that Faculty Senate met last Friday. The Chancellor was there at the end of the meeting via IAV. Frank praised Mike McFarlane for a great strategic plan presentation at the BOR meeting and to Sonja Sibert and others for their Diversity presentation. Classified Council Update Shirley Jones and Jolina Adams went over the Classified Council Attendance Survey. The survey was conducted by Classified because of concerns that only officers attended the classified meetings. They are trying to get people more involved. They received 12 surveys back out of 81 classified people. It seems that mostly people are just too busy to participate. Supervisors need to let their classified personnel attend meetings if they want. They extended an invitation for anyone on PC to attend their meetings. The next Classified Council meeting in November 19. SGA Update Julie Smith gave an update on SGA business. The SGA elections have been held. SGA has 21 officers this year as compared with 9 officers last year. The SGA constitution says that they can have up to 26 officers. There has been a tremendous increase in participation. There are many different things happening at all of the campuses. IAV Scheduling Procedure Frank Daniels reported that the IAV procedures have gone through the Distance Education committee and Faculty Senate. Mike McFarlane wanted a little more time to review. We will bring back for approval at the next Presidents Council meeting. Miscellaneous Mike McFarlane and Lynn Mahlberg will be heading to Pahrump for position interviews the Pahrump Valley Campus Manager and the Recruiter/Advisor. Amber Donnelli representing the Budget & Facilities committee recommended the need for creating a policy that deals with individuals painting their office and the need to get permission before doing something like that to their office. Presidents Council does support creating a procedure for painting offices. The Budget & Facilities committee is also working of developing a policy for Smart Board installations. John Rice attended a sustainable energy conference on Friday in Reno. He represented GBC on the educational panel. It was a terrific program and everyone was pleased that GBC was participating. Lynn Mahlberg commended Sonja Sibert for keeping up with the tremendous amount of reports that have been requested by the system office.
