Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported nothing has happened during the summer. The first Faculty Senate meeting of the semester is scheduled for August 28, 2009. Classified Council Update Shirley Jones announced the first Classified Council meeting is scheduled for September. Future of SGA SGA President Eron Sanchez invited Julie Smith and Paulette Batayola to the meeting to talk about the future of SGA. Eron announced he would be resigning as President of the SGA and that VP Paulette Batayola would take over as President. Paulette Batayola is also a Resident Advisor for student housing and is from Pahrump. Eron thanked the administration. Eron has moved back to Battle Mountain and will continue to help as he can. Carl said he is sorry to see Eron go and thanked him for his work this past year, especially his involvement with the student forums on the budget. The students were active and supportive of administration and we need to continue the good exchange of ideas. Paulette wanted to thank Eron as well. Paulette reported that on Friday, the SGA determined the goal for this next year is to Make a Difference Together. There is a strong sense of unity and wanting to make a difference. Paulette went over the calendar of student activities. Nevada Mining Association Dinner at BOR Meeting Carl Diekhans needs to know who will be attending the dinner that the Nevada Mining Association is hosting on September 16 and the mine tour that same day. Please let Mardell know by August 23. Miscellaneous Carl Diekhans reported that the new BOR chair, James Dean Leavitt, is reaching out to many local people to make relationships. We need to compile a fact sheet for anyone who may be speaking with him. Please do this within the next week. BOR Meeting planning committee meets today at 2:00 p.m. in BHCR. We have a big push to clean up things. We really want our campus to shine. Carl would like all of the bulletin boards cleaned up and all paper removed from the glass at entry ways. We are asking everyone to take care of their areas and to point out things that need to be done. Carl reported that the Chancellor will be continuing the Chancellors memo that Jim Rogers started. The process will not be as intense. The theme this time will be the success stories of former students and former projects where community or students have benefited. Carl reported the system is looking at hiring a public relations firm to extend the communications on what is NSHE. There is not a good view of what NSHE is and what institutions are a part of NSHE. We are not well recognized as a system. John says that the communications officers have been talking about this issue for a couple of years. Each institution is well recognized in their service area, but not as a system. Community colleges have always been eager to work together on this. There will be a unified voice for legislative efforts. Carl reported that adjunct pay is increasing this semester to $800 per credit. We have been working for the past three years to increase adjunct pay throughout our six county service area. We will be discussing what we can do for full time faculty overload. Frank Daniels talked to the other campus directors about dedication plaques in buildings. They all think it is a good idea. Carl reported the costs will be covered by capital improvement and not operating budgets. Carl will have Dorinda Friez coordinate. Lynn Mahlberg had a meeting this morning with Karmen Boehlke, the UNLV tele-counseling graduate student who will be providing mental health tele-counseling services to our students through the partnership with UNLV, CIS and GBC. We will be able to provide access anywhere we have IAV. Brochures will be distributed, however we are not advertising this service. The conference room at HR is a private IAV location for the Elko location. The process is very confidential. We will be the first community college to offer this type of counseling. It is a pilot program not funded by the formula funding. Lynn Mahlberg reported GBC is doing a presentation on diversity at the BOR meeting. There will be a planning meeting tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. in HTC 121. John Rice and Bret Murphy attended the National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. John reported the summit was about efficiencies in energy, conservation, and renewable energy. He reported Senator Reid is working hard to make sure these programs are developed in Nevada. John reported that Valley Electric (along with Rheem) in Pahrump will be installing 5,000 solar hot water heating units to their customers in Pahrump. Valley Electric will finance at 0%. Their customers electrical bills will not go up because of the savings in power usage. GBC will be developing a MOU with Valley Electric and Rheem to train the installers. We will train 80 installers to begin with. They will need 40 hours of training. The classes will be transferable that could go towards a certificate or degree. John Rice and Cliff Ferry have been putting together the brochure and on-line presentation for the strategic plan for the BOR meeting. John thinks our strategic plan template will be an example of what all the institutions should be doing.
