Communities in Schools Carl Diekhans reported he met with Gerald Ackerman and Terry Clark of Communities in Schools about the possibility of partnering with the UNR School of Medicine to provide counseling services to GBC students. They would use interns and graduate students at UNLV to provide the counseling interactively. A copy of their proposal has been given to the Vice Presidents for their review. The proposal from Communities in Schools would be a way the college to provide a much needed service to our students. Communities in Schools Partnership with UNLV Lynn Mahlberg said the potential partnership could be very exciting. It fits in with the crisis intervention committee. It is not uncommon for different mental issues to be occurring in the student population. Lynn reported she had hoped to fund mental health services with the enhancement budget, but funding would not happen this biennium. The only way in some aspects for the rural areas to be served is through telemedicine. Graduate students would provide the services through an interactive hookup. The graduate student would meet with the students identified by the college and some teleconferencing and interactive video conferencing at a secure location. This program helps the graduate student obtain their 300 hours of internship. The Communities in School grant would be $70,000 for one intern. We would be working to coordinate the facilities and teleconferencing sessions. Mental health, substance abuse, pregnancy, and anger management are some of the mental health issues that will be handled by the intern. The second part of the Communities in Schools grant proposal is the fellowship program which will have a career exploration component to it. This will be on hold for a while until the mental health tele-counseling is up and running. Faculty Senate Update Frank Daniels reported there is only one thing left from the May meeting and that is budget reduction ideas. We all have to work together to see us through the next 2-3 years. The new Faculty Senate committee assignments have been made. Carl said the Presidents are in receipt of the Senates agreement to the NFA statement requesting no code changes. Presidents are exploring the information from the personnel committee recommendations. The next Board of Regents meeting will be quite serious with the main topic of suspension of the salary schedules a top concern. Step increases are not funded. Classified Council Update Annie Ulrich stated this is her last meeting. Shirley Jones and Jolina Adams are next years co-chairs for Classified Council. Pat Loper is the vice chair. Keitha Donovan participated in the Relay for Life by making caps. The Relay for Life event brought in $63,000. SGA Update No report. Miscellaneous Carl would like to talk to Eron Sanchez about the fee increase before the Regents meeting. About 8 months ago, the Board approved a 5% fee increase and an additional 5% increase for FY11. The students did a good job at the legislature. Students said they would agree to an increase in tuition if it is kept at 5% per year. The community colleges did not like the idea of raising fees in the middle of the semester. They will petition the Board that the increase be started in spring. The 5% increase will go into the state budget and cannot be carried forward. A 5% increase for the spring would be approximately $83,000 in additional revenue. For the second year it would be approximately $300,000. We can spend a portion for student access, dual credit, communities in schools, and retention and recruiting, and for people who have lost their jobs and dont qualify for Pell grants. John Rice reported the Efficiency Report is due this week. Let John know of any revisions you may have. John reported the Chancellor requested a ten year strategy of each institution. Please provide John with your comments. We have our mission and commitment statement with the institutional goals. The objectives are pretty fluid. Carl said that the Chancellor probably will want more specifics. We need to put some of the objectives under the goals. The Chancellor wants what we are really going to do.
