Mission Statement Presidents Council has reviewed the Mission Statement and a number of times. The only recommended change to the Mission Statement is to change the miles of service area to 62,000 miles. Presidents Council approved the Mission Statement. It does not have to go to the Board for approval because we are just clarifying the mission statement. We should let the Board know for informational purposes that the mission statement has been reworded. Mardell will send the Mission Statement to the Chancellor. Christmas in the Night-Time Sky Presidents Council discussed whether to host the Christmas in the Night-Time Sky event this year. The event brings 3,000 to 4,000 people to the campus which is good public relations. It takes approximately fourteen people working at time and a half to cover the event. We could bill the overtime expense to Terry Hritz at KENV. The big issue is the concerns over discharging the fireworks from the roof of Lundberg Hall. Presidents Council discussed other possible locations. We dont want to do it on the roof again. The fireworks could be discharged from the Health Sciences parking lot. Miscellaneous Pat Anderson requested feedback on how to proceed on the emergency notification system. The ConnectEd system that Presidents Council reviewed on April 22 will cost approximately $12,000 to $15,000 per year. ConnectEd would allow us to push the students to keep current with their contact information. Pat can also still look into external alarms and call boxes. Presidents Council approved that Pat should move forward with ConnectEd by Blackboard college edition. Mike McFarlane reported that the accreditation visit went as well as we could hope for. Mike said he was so focused on not getting recommendations that he was pleasantly surprised at receiving three commendations. The commendations primarily involved services. If this holds up in the final report we will not have another accreditation visit for five years. Mike acknowledged faculty and staff input into the accreditation process. Mike related that Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities is exploring different accreditation processes. We do not know when a new process will be implemented. Ed Nickel introduced Cindy Hyslop as the new Faculty Senate chair. This is Eds last meeting of Presidents Council. Ed reported that Faculty Senate will be reviewing the change to the Faculty Senate Bylaws pertaining to committee work. Ed stated that discussions on shared governance have been happening. The informal shared governance committee would like to become a senate committee. Bill Reinhard reported we are still waiting on the next round of reports from the Governors office on the revenue streams. GBC will approach the budget cuts in a collaborative manner. But for the moment we need to come up with different scenarios on the potential outcome that additional budget cuts would have on the college. Bill Reinhard attended a Special Board of Regents meeting on May 1. It comes as no surprise that there will be limited CIP dollars. GBC is number thirteen on the list for the Pahrump facility. We have money to be able to do a lease. So if we can acquire land under a lease/purchase agreement, we would have money for this type of arrangement. Bill should be invited to talk to the Faculty Senate about this topic. Lynn Mahlberg reported that GBC will have 296 graduates this year with 193 walking. Each graduate will receive three tickets. Ely is graduating 26; Winnemucca is graduating 36; Battle Mountain is graduating 14; and Pahrump is graduating 10. We have 46 students receiving a bachelors degree and 223 receiving an associate degree. Lynn Mahlberg reported that Student Services is embarking on a parent program for fall 2008. We are seeing more traditional students on campus. So there is more of a need to provide training for the parents. Cindy Hyslop commented on how well Pahrump handles their open labs. The quality of lab aids is excellent. They do not sit behind the desk at all. John Rice reported the Foundation trustees met last week. The trustees approved the budget for next year. The budget will include an allocation for a lending library for developmental courses. Amber Overholser, Retention Coordinator, came up with this idea. John Rice reported that each Foundation trustee pledged $250 toward the Chancellors challenge that each institute come up $5,000 for the health programs. GBC was the first to contribute to this challenge. John Rice said he is developing a new brochure for fall. He spoke with Keith Clark about taking photographs for us. The tone and quality will match from photo to photo. Our mission statement will be put in the brochure. Paul Killpatrick reported that he took five Rotaract members Reno. The Elko Rotaract club received an award for being the first Rotaract Club in the state of Nevada. Paul announced that Kevin Melcher will take over as the Rotaract advisor along with Laurie Walsh.
