Mission Statement We need to change the service area to 62,000 square miles. The mission statement will be brought back at the next Presidents Council meeting. Sabbatical Leave Policy Presidents Council had a couple of minor questions that should go back to Cindy Hyslop one last time for clarification. Ed Nickel will meet with Cindy on this matter. Miscellaneous Lynn Mahlberg reported the Career Fair on April 9 was well attended. A lot of health care businesses were represented as well as mining and emergency services. Other representatives were there from the Elko County School District, the city police and sheriffs office, BLM, weather bureau, and the army and navy. The Career Fair is a good opportunity for us to talk to the employers about their needs. Also during the Career Fair we had thirteen Owyhee high school seniors and twenty 8th graders were here to tour the campus. Ed Nickel reported that the textbook policy was reviewed by John Albrecht. The policy is fine how it is, but still has some gray areas. Presidents Council will hold for more discussion while Ed Nickel checks with the other senate chairs to see what other institutions say in their textbook policies. Lynn Mahlberg reported that the Recruitment department sent invitations to senior high school students in the area inviting them to tour the campus during spring break. We had twenty-five students who took the tour during spring break. It worked well as a recruitment effort Lynn Mahlberg reported we have a number of Gear Up students at the college. Janet Usinger of the Gear Up program was here to talk to the students as she has met with them over the years for a qualitative analysis. She goes all over the state to interview parents and students and they really love GBC. Janet feels that this is in part due to the GBC recruitment department. Lynn Mahlberg stated that last week the Student Government election process began with interested students filing for the SGA positions. There was a great response for students wanting to participate. Julie Smith has been recruiting student leaders. SGA meetings have been held from all of the campuses. Julie sits with all of them and tells them what their responsibility will be. The students had to have attended at least two SGA meetings and have to make a campaign speech. Lynn Mahlberg reported on the success of the student cook-off for the housing students last Tuesday night. Stacie Potter and Julie Smith continue to come up with creative, fun and organized activities for the students to participate in creating that sticky campus concept. Lynn Mahlberg stated the Intervention Team met yesterday. The members are pleased that Faculty Senate is looking at the committee assignments. The co-chairs for next year will be Mary Ray and Pat Anderson with Stacie Potter as the recorder. The group wants to move more toward peer mentoring. Mike McFarlane presented the Go No Go form for the I have a dream empowerment project for the Nevada Humanities Committee. Presidents Council voted to support it. Mike McFarlane will schedule two pre-accreditation meetings next week to brief the campus about the accreditation visit on April 29-30, 2008.
