Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane reported everything is proceeding well. There is nothing new to report. Faculty Senate Update Ed Nickel reported that the Faculty Senate meeting on March 14 was the longest meeting this year. He invited Mike McFarlane to Faculty Senate to explain why a search was not done for the dean position. Faculty were concerned by the precedence the move would make, but were more or less resigned to the notion. Mike assured them it was a onetime situation due to budget concerns. Administration should take care to communicate these things as early as possible. It was announced during Faculty Senate that Glen Tenney would be transferring from Elko to the Pahrump Valley Campus. The transfer of such a distinguished faculty member gives more value to our commitment to that campus; it brings a history of GBC to that area that will integrate and strengthen the Pahrump Valley Campus. Bill Reinhard and Star Thomas talked about the budget reductions and that we are still looking for $35,000 to give back to the state. Ed told PC that he thinks that GBC should consider having a tutor fee for the English and Math classes. A tutor fee would eliminate the need to raid the other lab fee accounts in lean times. We should get the Faculty Senate Budget and Facilities involved with this discussion to come up with some ideas to generate fees to pay for the services our students need. Miscellaneous Paul Killpatrick reported there is a special Budget and Finance Board of Regents meeting next week on March 26 to discuss capital improvement projects. GBC is hoping for development dollars for Pahrump and for the expansion of the welding lab. The total request will be $8.5 million. Bill Reinhard said to keep in mind that everything we do requires State Public Works Board approval. They generate a number of demands that are time intensive. This is a retroactive issue which goes back to every project we have going. Bill has five projects that have been put on hold because we dont have the resources to comply with public works. Presidents Council discussed the land deal in Pahrump and the importance that it be an NSHE deal and not a Nye County deal. Lynn Mahlberg reported that Truckee Meadows Community College will be conducting an interactive meeting on FERPA regulations that will be broadcasted to Elko. She will try to free up as many Student Services people so they can attend. The meeting will be on May 5, 2008. Lynn Mahlberg related that the Student Government Association raised over $850 in donations for the Wells Earthquake relief fund during their fundraising event yesterday at Caf X. Lynn also reminded Presidents Council about the self defense class this evening in the GBC Theater starting at 7:00 p.m. John Rice talked about the planning for the community center expansion. We have been working with the architect. John expects that work on the Student Services part will begin in January 2009 and work on Caf X will begin toward the end of the spring 2009 semester and on into summer and into the fall. During the construction the Foundation offices will have to relocate. The plan is to relocate to the Academic Success Center. Mike says we also need a dedicated place for online testing. Mike should find out where all of the testing is being done on campus to determine how much space it needed for testing. The Faculty Senate Budget and Facilities committee needs to know that the college needs a testing area. The Foundation would not proceed with the project if they do not have a place to relocate their offices. Bill says take a look at floor plans so we can strategically plan what is best. Mike McFarlane presented the Go-No Go worksheet for the Department of Energy Grant. Presidents Council recommended going forward with the grant application. Mike McFarlane, Carl Diekhans and Garry Heberer have met to develop a floor plan for the newly leased building in Pahrump. The building has 5000 square feet - enough room for registration, two faculty offices and maybe three classrooms.
