Accreditation Update Cliff Ferry reported that progress is being made in the accreditation report. Many sections of the report are finished. We should have an assessment plan by the time the team is here. Mike McFarlane is putting together some statistical information. Lynn provided an updated report on enrollments for the past five years. Ed Nickel and Lynn Mahlberg will meet to talk with Carrie Bruno to discuss the academic freedom policy. Standard 6 Presidents Council discussed the Standard 6 draft and recommended changes to Cliff Ferry. SGA Update Richie Lespade reported that the Student Government Association should have $10,000 to carry over to the next fiscal year. SGA is hoping to match some nursing funds for hand held equipment that they need. Richie relayed that as part of the Student Union Nights (SUN); Tuesdays will also be movie night. Friday Night Follies is doing great. The Inter-Varsity Club is a faith based club which has been active in helping with various activities. The SGA will be holding a fundraiser for the city of Wells Earthquake Relief Fund on St. Patricks Day. They will be conducting an Easter Egg Hunt a week before spring break. The Rotaract Club will be in Wells on March 22 to help clean up. The SGA elections will be held the week of April 21-24. Applications are available on March 31. Campaigning will be April 12-24. The votes will be counted on April 25. Richie said he will not be running for President again. He said there is full representation in SGA from all campuses. Richie will be in Ely on Friday and will address Faculty Senate from there. SGA will be talking to the seniors at the Senior Center today at noon. Richie feels it has been a very good year and SGA is finishing strong. Classified Council Update Marsha Holford reported that the two classified spring scholarships were awarded to Irma Reyes and Carmen Matlock. February 15 was the deadline for the Tony Salvatierra Scholarship. To date, no applications have been received from financial aid. Classified Council conducted the Gifts of Love project which was very successful. They collected many donations of backpacks and personal items. Classified donated two baskets to the Foundation Dinner Dance. The next Classified Council meeting is March 28. They will be nominating outstanding classified employees of the year. Classified Council will begin planning for the GBC Family picnic in April. The picnic is scheduled for June 6, 2008. Grants Update Jeannie Rosenthal reported that the Energy Industry Training grant is due on March 10. Garry Heberer and Bret Murphy were originally looking at retraining people who were let go from Yucca Mountain, but found that they were trained and only interested in being relocated. This is why we havent followed up rapidly on the proposal. The BLM has leased land in Pahrump to different solar companies, so employment in the solar industry in Pahrump will be increasing. Senator Reids office called to see if GBC was going to apply. They would like to have a conference call on Thursday to talk to us about what we are planning. Jeannie reported there will be a Title III competition this year. GBC will have to apply for eligibility again. We can forgo the Go-No-Go form on the eligibility and just proceed. Title III eligibility will allow GBC to waive the $25,000 match that financial aid has to come up with. We will need to consider GBCs strengths and weaknesses, and our plans to attain institutional stability. Our full time enrollment determines whether we are stable because of formulas. Lynn says we need funding for peer mentors and for the Recruitment Plus Program to track students from the time they are prospective students to alumnae. GBCs recruitment department is one of the strongest in the state with our relationship with the high schools, so they have done a great job. Focus groups will be conducted to get information from everyone. The college was asked to apply for a congressional appropriation for the Western Folklife Center because it would be more likely to be approved. GBC applied for and received the appropriation. The appropriation is $335,000 which will be funneled to the Western Folklife Center. The money is to increase their programming and for general operating expenses. GBC definitely needs to hold at least 10% for administrative costs. PC would like to see a copy of the agreement before it is finalized. GBC is also working with the Western Folklife Center on a Tumble Words program (through the Nevada Arts Council). Red Shuttleworth will be providing a free writing workshop on campus on March 27 at 1:00 p.m. in the Social Room. Jeannie has submitted the Martin Luther King: I Have a Dream grant proposal yesterday. They will try to get some people to Pahrump. Danny Gonzales is trying to put together an ACLU panel discussion. A history of the civil rights movement will be discussed. The culmination of the event will provide people with a place to showcase their personal I Have a Dream experiences by whatever means they want film, speech, song, dance, poetry. Lynn Owens is the project investigator. The event will be from January 19-24, 2009. The GBC French Film Festival has just finished. Every film had between 40-50 people. The HRSA Human Services grant will be going through a review in May. Jeannie needs to report on where we are with the goals and objectives. Mike McFarlane wanted to know if the ICE committee had a theme for the year. If they come up with a theme, it is a better chance that faculty can feed off of the theme. Jeannie feels it is advantageous to have an annual theme. Next year the theme will probably be the empowerment and civil liberties theme. The ICE committee is putting together an offer to Arun Ghandis visit for April 10, 2008. Jeannie is also working on getting someone here from the University of Utahs Middle East Center as well. The Nevada Shakespeare Company will be here on March 21, 7:00 p.m., at the GBC Theater performing Romeo and Juliet. Online Catalog Susanna Dorr talked about the online catalog. Everything on the web needs to be changed because the catalog is being revised. If everyone on campus is mindful that whenever any information changes to keep Susanna in the loop. Susanna has met with the department heads. Some felt that the website should remain the same as the printed version and some did not. The catalog is the contract that we have with the student. Why cant the official document be on the web? Whatever version they are looking at online, it needs to be apparent to the student. We do want the website to be updated with current program information. There needs to be a disclaimer stating it is current information and the student would have to refer back to the catalog pertaining to the year they declared a degree. Last year, the process of putting the catalog was tedious. The course descriptions were extracted from a word document and put into a database. It is quite a chore doing it this way. She came up with a couple of forms to track changes online. It would be an easier approach and should also help with SIS tracking. Susanna does need guidance on what will constitute an electronic signature. We need to examine the whole procedure and change it from an event to an ongoing process. Everything should come from one source. A group should convene to expand on these ideas. That group should consist of Lynn Mahlberg, John Rice, Susanna Dorr, Laura Gallegos, Joyce Shaw and Yvonne Sutherland. Miscellaneous Presidents Council talked about Susanna creating a link to an index page of all policies that are in a syllabus. Susanna just needs to know what should be in the index. Lynn Mahlberg announced that the Presidents Awards Ceremony is scheduled for April 25. Mike McFarlane reported we are over 100 FTE up from this time last year. Mike McFarlane reported an organizational structure change with Margaret Puccinelli being designated as Dean for Health Sciences and Human Services. This was not a move that needed approval from Faculty Senate or Presidents Council. No position was open, so no search was required. We are following the procedure that was established three years ago to establish three dean positions - Dean of Applied Science, Dean of Health Sciences and Human Services, and Dean of Arts & Humanities. The change is the result of consolidating program and departmental administrative duties into one position. With the changing of positions GBC will be saving money. Ed Nickel has been getting calls on the dean issue and the lack of a search. He recommended Mike should address it in Faculty Senate on Friday.
