Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane reported the accreditation process is proceeding well. Yesterday the assessment committee met. They are looking at accomplishments, as well as recognizing what we have not done. Mike emailed a copy of the draft assessment process to Presidents Council for their review. Bonnie Hofland has put together this draft. Creating a comprehensive GBC Institutional Assessment Planning document must become a GBC priority, and will require input from all of us. Part of the mission statement revision will fit into the assessment plan. Nevada Humanities Grant Application Presidents Council voted to proceed with the Nevada Humanities I have a Dream Empowerment grant. Mike related it is the standard grant we do every year. The idea/theme is empowerment which will coincide with black history month. There is discussion to extend the theme throughout the entire year. They have identified some potential speakers to bring into Pahrump. Standard 6 Cliff Ferry wanted Presidents Council to review the draft for Standard 6 for discussion at the next Presidents Council meeting. Miscellaneous Lynn Mahlberg reported that she will be talking to department chairs about the student advisee list provided to each faculty. Lynn Mahlberg reported that the sub-committee on civility (chaired by Laurie Walsh and Carrie Bruno) came up with the concept GBC CARES (Civility, Active, Responsibility, Excellence, and Success). Civility is a universal concern. The GBC CARES concept will be used in various ways college-wide. GBC CARES will be put on book marks and on posters to be placed in every classroom. It may be instrumental in putting it in all of the syllabi. Ed suggested that a link be added to the syllabi that goes to a webpage with an index of every policy that affects the class. Lynn Mahlberg said that there will be training for staff during the summer on a variety of things. Lynn Mahlberg mentioned in the current catalog, it says Ely Branch Campus and Winnemucca Branch campus. But Pahrump is in the catalog as Pahrump Valley Campus. Mike said because of NSHE definitions, Pahrump is officially classified as a branch campus and should be referenced in the catalog as a branch campus. Bill Reinhard reported on his trip to Pahrump last week. Carl Diekhans, Garry Heberer and Bill participated in a tour of the Pahrump Valley Campus along with representatives from NSHE, the Interim Finance Committee, the Legislative Counsel Bureau and Public Works. The group picked up on the need for a separate campus from the high school. They toured a potential site for a campus. In the interim, leasing some square footage separate from the high school is an option. Bill Reinhard and his department are still working on finalizing the budget cuts. They had planned to cut $35,000 from lab fees, but decided to leave those alone. We still have to find the $35,000 from somewhere. The full-time overloads are overspent. It is very difficult to predict. The summer advising helps enrollments, but at increased costs to the LOA account. Ed Nickel stated that ideas are being discussed within his department and probably most other departments as well over programs and budget. How does a department or faculty member make the decision on what programs should be put on hold? Mike McFarlane suggested that the departments make a documented recommendation to Mikes office which then can be discussed. The enrollment numbers are low for the Arts and Humanities Administration emphasis for the BAS. That department is recommending we drop this emphasis for now, since we do not have a theater instructor. This is similar to what Ed was talking about. Mike says several programs have been put on hold. Mike McFarlane said they have been talking to Newmont for a possible min surveying certificate. Paul Killpatrick reported that the iNtegrate group needs representative from GBC to participate in the decision making process. GBCs representative will be Lora McCarty. Fifty percent of her responsibilities will be working on the iNtegrate project. (-/567q~ 5 7 U p t ?
