Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane reported that faculty was given an update on the accreditation process during the welcome back. Faculty was told that we are looking at recommendations from the last full scale visit and what changes have occurred in the five years since. Girls Scout Cookie Sales On-Campus Pat Anderson was asked by Paul Killpatrick to come to Presidents Council to talk about the use of college facilities. There are some situations that are not addressed in the Use of College Facilities policy. For instance we do not have a policy for non profit or for profit vendors who want to use the campus to take photos (see next item) or sell items. Do we give permission to these types of people to be on site to conduct their business and is there any liability to the college? PC would like to see the groups have some sort of connection with the college. If we do it for the girls scouts, does that set a precedent? Vendors Coming On-Campus to take Photographs John Rice reported there is a local photographer who would like to use the campus to take portraits of students and their pets for Valentines Day. The photographer would make a donation to the Foundation for the privilege. Again, is there any liability to the college? John Rice talked to John Albrecht about the potential risk and John Albrecht does not seem to have a problem with this so long as it is in a public area. The vice presidents will check with their peers to see what the other institutions are doing. Everyone needs to think about these two items which will be brought back to Presidents Council for further discussion in two weeks. Policies & Procedures- 4.4 Accounting Regulations and Procedures Star Thomson and Cliff Ferry have reviewed the policy several times. Presidents Council approved. 5.10 Executive Transitions This policy has been approved, but Cliff wanted to know if we should include other administrators (Deans) as part of this policy. Mike and Cliff will discuss and make recommendations to PC. Miscellaneous Lynn Mahlberg reminded PC that the Student Government Association is having their taco feed today. It is also the first week of classes. Lynn also reminded PC that the next College Council meeting is Friday, January 25 at 9:00 a.m. in GTA 128. John Rice reported that the Foundation is conducting a Board of Trustees retreat on Thursday, January 24 at 5:15 p.m. in the Social Room. Mike McFarlane reported that we will be restricting the use of the on-line Smart Thinking tutoring service. This on-line tutoring service was available to students 24/7. Originally it was $12/hour, but now has reached $30/hour. We need to preserve this service, but somehow reduce our costs. Mike said that the policies will change so that students will be encouraged to use the tutors in the center, and we will create our own on-line tutoring. We may continue to use Smart Thinking for areas where we do not have tutors such as chemistry and physics. Ed Nickel said that from his point of view having in-house tutoring is more favorable. We can still use the My Drop Box resource. Services need to be accessible for those who need the services late at night or early mornings. We do need an on-line tutorial service. Barbara Moss and Garry Heberer and Mike are looking at this in depth. Mike McFarlane reported that enrollments are up over the previous spring. Live classes are dramatically up. We hope that we will not have the same problems with Black Board that we had last semester. Cliff Ferry reported that he will be attending his last State Board of Education meeting as president this week. He still has three more years on the board. The board is dealing with a lot of issues regarding charter schools and on-line learning. The board is split on on-line learning for K-3. Paul Killpatrick requested John Rice to reconvene the GBC Mission, Values and Visions taskforce so that we can finalize our mission statement. Paul would like to have this finalized prior to our accreditation visit in April. Paul Killpatrick asked Bill Reinhard to form and chair a new bookstore advisory group that will collectively try to improve the student success experiences at our bookstore. The group will meet at the end of the semester to analyze what went right and what went wrong and try to educate students to be better consumers. Paul Killpatrick and Bill Reinhard will be attending the Interim Finance Committee meeting in Carson City on Thursday, January 24.
