Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane reported information is coming in. Garry Heberer and Cliff Ferry are working on Nye County and online enrollments which are significant parts of the accreditation. Lynn Mahlberg said she will give the student services report on enrollments to Cliff. The Northwest accreditation team will be on April 29-30, 2008 for the accreditation visit. Conference Update Amber Overholser reported on her attendance at a conference she attended about creating an early alert intervention plan for at-risk students. The conference covered different aspects of student success, with the most emphasis centered on the importance of a referral system that is uniform, campus-wide and provides faculty, staff and students a means to identify students exhibiting at-risk indicators for low performance or dropping out. Amber has created a list of things she would like to do in the retention department: Create a web-based referral system with existing technological resources on campuses Establish method and procedure for tracking student contacts, successes, etc. Review methods of communication with students, including possibilities for email, regular mail and telephone. Review current and past withdrawal process Present EAP to full-time and adjunct faculty during the beginning of the spring semester Visit each campus, meeting with staff and faculty Presidents Council discussed the issue of incorrect student contact information. Students not changing contact information is an issue. Faculty does try to contact students at risk but phone numbers and addresses are not current and students dont seem to check their GBC email addresses. Ed Nickel said that we have made our system so efficient that we cannot contact the student; they have to contact us. Cliff says that we need some kind of redundancy which is a key part of language and communication. Amber will be presenting the early alert program starting next semester during the in-service. Amber plans to visit every campus to implement the program at all campuses. She is looking to hire a couple of peer mentors. Need to communicate to faculty what is happening with this new program. Please send any suggestions to Amber. Student Employment Lynn Mahlberg asked Keitha Donovan to come today to talk about student employment. Keith reported that funding for student employment comes from a variety of sources. All students have equal opportunity for employment. Keitha has met with Lucina Lewis and Janie Moore about some of the issues and inconsistencies regarding hiring of student workers: hiring students without an interview or students working without the proper paperwork being completed. There needed to be a tightening up of the rules. All jobs should be posted. An application must be submitted and an interview conducted. Job responsibilities, expectations and other information (getting to work on-time, having a presentable appearance, payroll guidelines, sexual harassment training, and overview of procedures) should be presented to the student hire. Policies & Procedures- 4.9 Travel approved by Presidents Council and will be put onto the website. 5.12 Administrative Faculty Evaluation the evaluation form was approved in the past. Cliff has been working on the written procedure. Presidents Council approved. Mike said that his department is working with Susanna Dorr to create a web faculty handbook with links to all of the procedures. Miscellaneous Presidents Council further discussed what facultys responsibilities should be for recruiting efforts. Some CTE faculty are heavily involved in recruiting. All recruiting efforts need to be coordinated with the recruiting department. Recruiting by faculty needs more discussion starting with the department chairs. Facultys role in recruiting needs to be more clearly defined. John Rice reported that Carolyn Traynor has been hired as the foundation services coordinator. Mike McFarlane reported that Chelsea Jackson has been hired as the new Tech Prep Coordinator. Paul Killpatrick reported that the Nevada Community College Conference has been canceled because of budget cuts. Paul Killpatrick is going to Pahrump tomorrow for meetings. He will be in Las Vegas on Thursday to talk about the budget. Presidents Council clarified the policy on food in Berg Hall Conference Room. The only entity that is allowed to conduct luncheons in Berg Hall conference room is the Foundation.
