Graduation and Job Placement Pat Collins presented some statistics from the Graduate Survey 2006-2007 and the Ongoing Admission Advising and Career Center Student Survey. There was a good return on the surveys. Statistics from 1999-2000 through 2006-2007 show that student use of the Career Center has increased by 358%; total services has increased by 148%; student advising has increased by 72%; and student employment services has increased by 445%. These totals do not include any phone calls or online services. The Career Center has purchased a computer program called Articulate that provides simulated career center workshops to the outlying areas. The program can be personalized to each individual and customized workshops can be created to present online. The Career Center is trying to put a lot of the services online. The Career Center offers faculty advising in the summer, which has meant an increase in the use of advisors. Cliff Ferry indicated that all of this information will be good documentation for the accreditation report. John Rice the new back to school advertising campaign highlights the higher the degree, the more money one makes in the course of a lifetime (example: someone can make $1.2 million more with a baccalaureate degree over just a high school degree in the course of a lifetime). An education has social value too. It would be nice to be able to track salary information by county. Representatives from the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) will be here on November 28 to talk about jobs not related to the mining industry. GBC Foundation Employee Campaign Patty Jones reported that pictures from the employee campaign photo contest have been posted to the website for voting. People can vote until November 5. The employee campaign pledge numbers are fairly good so far. Patty asked Presidents Council to renew or increase their pledge to the employee campaign. John said that it is helpful to get staff participation if they already have 100% participation from Presidents Council. GBCF raises funds that are comparable to the larger institutions. Participation has always been good and they want to continue that success. Policies & Procedures- Academic and Administrative Personnel Presidents Council reviewed more sections in the academic and administrative personnel policy. The faculty senate website for search committees seems to be more undated then what is in this policy. Cindy Hylsop should be able to get that wording. Bill needs to have budgetary oversight on new hires. Bill is working on a procedure to ensure that funding is available for new hires. Miscellaneous Pat Anderson is looking over security procedures and the regularity of fire drills. Last year, fire drills were not done regularly because of the lack of personnel. This year we are on track and documentation is in order. Fire drills have already been done at the TV station, Health Sciences, B&G, the mill shop, and all College Parkway dorms. The college dorms were done in conjunction with the city fire prevention week. Fire extinguisher training is ongoing yearly. The child center fire drills are done differently. A fire drill is conducted once per month in the child center (five drills in one week for each of the classes). Shelters within rehearsals are conducted yearly. Emergency procedures and evacuation training are conducted during the summer. Pat has documented all of this for the fire department. The other campuses schedule and document their own fire drills. Thanks to Mary Swetich, the Ely campus has formed a partnership with the White Pine County Sheriffs office and the Ely Fire Department to improve campus safety. The Ely campus was the first in the county to install a Knox-Box rapid entry system five years for the fire department and now have a second one for the law enforcement. The Knox Box provides non-destructive access to the college for authorized public safety officers. Pat Anderson reported that the company that was here doing the sonic alarms testing has not submitted a written bid. She is in contact with a different sales representative to schedule a walk through. We should have funding for this through SHEPAC. Pat is also looking to replace the call boxes with better boxes. NOTE: Presidents Council was interrupted by a fire drill conducted by Pat Anderson and the Elko Fire Department. The meeting resumed after the fired drill (approximately 20 minutes). Lynn Mahlberg said the push for spring registration is paying off. There have been two mailings so far. We currently have 134 FTE for spring compared with 81 FTE for same time last year. The schedule will be mailed on December 3. In January, a calling campaign will be implemented to current students who have not enrolled for spring. Ed Nickel has done some research on the computer/digital signage. One community college and a number of business schools have done this. We could be the first in Nevada to do something like this. Ed will continue his research. John Rice reported there will be a dinner dance planning meeting tonight after work in Caf X (during Student Union Night) to brainstorm.
