Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane said that the annual action plans are due today. Use of the GBC-All Email Presidents Council voted to eliminate the GBC-All email. Nye County Update- Tammy Robinson reported visiting the junior and senior high school classes. There are a total of 201 seniors at Pahrump Valley High School compared with 456 that started as freshman. Twenty-two percent of the seniors have a specific plan; 13% of the seniors are in the process of applying to colleges; and 4.7% knew about Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We will be conducting ongoing outreach in Nye County within the next year. The superintendent is talking about retention at the high school level. Richie Lespade visited Pahrump and indicated that there is plenty of available work in the Las Vegas area that the students are pursuing. Tammy indicated that we need to integrate ourselves into the community and make the students and their families see the value of an education. They have a GED program and an alternative high school program. Tammy announced there will be a college fair on December 5 in Pahrump. It is the first time a college fair has happened at the Pahrump Valley Campus. We should think about scheduling a town hall meeting at the same time to tie into the college fair. Richie said the some of the issues that we may want to look into are web campus and the computer login problems. Housing Fee Increase Julie Byrnes reported that we are looking at a housing fee increase due to increased utility costs. The fee increases have been approved by the housing advisory board, which includes student representation. The new fees will be effective starting in the fall. Fees will be raised across the board by 10%. The month to month rental for the apartments will increase $50 per month. Presidents Council approved the increase in housing fees. Student Activities Julie Smith introduced Ella Trujillo, Jacqueline Lemback, and Hannah Works. Ella is the lead RA in housing and joined SGA this year. Jacqueline is a senator and an ambassador. Hannah is a senator from Carson City. Richie Lespade reported on the Red Ribbon Week to be held the week of October 22. He asked Lynn Mahlberg and Paul Killpatrick to judge the costume party. Red Ribbon Week is a national event that happens at colleges throughout the country. Jacqueline Lemback announced the start of the new Student Union Night (SUN) to be held every Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Caf X. Everyone is invited. They will have 3 chicken wings for $1 and free drawings for $20 Caf X gift cards. The SGA would like to have faculty participation, and encourages faculty to announce these events at the beginning of class. Hannah Works came to GBC from Carson City. She turned down scholarships to College of Southern Idaho, TMCC and WNC to come to GBC because she felt it would be a fun place to be. Housing was fun, but she felt that activities on campus were lacking. It was from here that they came up with SUN every Tuesday night. It is important to get the students wanting to come over to the student union. Its going to be more upbeat and lively, like the housing. Ella Trujillo came to GBC 21/2 years ago with no intention of staying. She stayed because she found something in housing. Housing is going strong because of Stacie Potter, but we need other activities on campus that includes everyone. It is important to support the student leaders and their activities. SUN is a great idea. Ella asked that faculty mention SUN in their classes, as well as putting flyers in the class rooms. Cliff Ferry stated to the students that the college culture has changed though out time. He may work on putting something regarding the college culture and how it has changed into the accreditation report. Academic and Administrative Personnel Policy Review Cliff Ferry distributed this policy for an initial review. Ed will show the policy to Cindy Hyslop. We need a search waiver procedure. Lucina Lewis and Cliff Ferry will work on the search waiver procedure and bring back to Presidents Council. We need to take a look at the placement of administrative faculty. TMCC has a good system for placing administrative faculty. Presidents Council recommended increasing the reimbursement for interview costs to $750. Miscellaneous Presidents Council looked at the Emeritus Policy submitted for review by the Personnel Committee. PC made some minor changes that Ed Nickel will get to Cindy Hyslop. PC would like a statement included that states the Emeritus Faculty must continue to conform to NSHE code. Lynn Mahlberg requested verification on the Christmas Closure. The Christmas Closure will be December 24, 2007 January 1, 2008. People may use either annual leave or comp time during the closure. As always, staff who do not wish to take off during the closure may make arrangements with their supervisor to work through the holidays. The Switchboard and Security will be the only departments required to be here during the closure.
