Recycling Proposal Carrie Bruno, earth sciences instructor, and earth advocate presented some recycling opportunities and strategies that GBC could implement on campus. Carrie said that these strategies can feasibly be done with a small budget and big support from faculty, staff, and students. As a prelude Carrie reported that she and Mardell Wilkins serve on a county-wide taskforce called Elko County against Illegal Dumping (ECAID). ECAID has a subcommittee that focuses on recycling opportunities in Elko. There are many existing recycling opportunities in Elko, but the focus of this presentation will be on what GBC can do now. Growing green at GBC is the title of the program which will focus on two things that we can recycle: aluminum and card board. Elko Auto Wrecking pays $.30/pound for aluminum. GBC can place six aluminum recycling containers around campus for an initial cost of $242. Carrie also recommended transitioning from plastic to aluminum vending machines. It is also reasonable for GBC to start recycling cardboard. Wal-Mart has graciously agreed to start accepting cardboard. GBC can act as a satellite center and collect cardboard that can then be transported to Wal-Mart. Both of these recycling efforts would bring forth environmental awareness, reduce waste, and be minimal costs to start up. An additional opportunity to consider is recycling paper. Shred-It is a company based in Reno that is already used by many banks, state agencies, and colleges. They provide shredding of confidential documents and paper recycling. The costs are minimal and Shed-It can pick up and transport the material. GBC can get recycling started by creating an environmental awareness team made of faculty, staff, and students from all campuses. Participation from these groups ensures that the efforts of the team are continued year to year. The team would be responsible for promoting environmental awareness on campus and in the community, implementing recycling strategies, and implementing additional methods of resource conservation. Growing Green at GBC is possible! Bill will review the contract we have with the vending machines. We should also look into plastic recycling opportunities. John Rice would like to have Carrie come to a City Council meeting for a presentation after GBC moves forward on a recycling program. We need to set an example. Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane and Cliff Ferry have been working on the accreditation process. Mike reported the steering committee has been created and assignments will be made. There a nine standards to address. Cliff has been working on the planning aspect the accreditation. We have a list of all of past objectives for the annual plans from each of the areas. Those action plans need to be reviewed to see what needs to be discarded, changed or added. For example we need to add Nye County as an objective under academic affairs. Retention and student success should be a college-wide goal. Cliff says we need to have measurable numbers. Examples would be including the percentage of student loan repayments, or the average time to complete a work order. Each area needs to come up with their own measures. Employee Campaign- Patty Jones discussed the employee campaign which has officially kicked off. The goal is to increase camaraderie around campus. The Employee Giving Campaign will take place during the first two weeks of October with our institutional vision focused on student success at GBC. A photo essay contest will be conducted at this time. Heres how to participate: FIND YOUR NAME on the list of teams at right. If we inadvertently missed your name, please forgive us and let us know as soon as possible. GET IN TOUCH with your teammates by email or in person to: Determine if any among you has a digital camera and would be either willing to use it or share it with other team members. Discuss ways to visually present "student success" with your teammates. You can actually stage photos -- they need not be candid. Work together to make the vision happen. Note: If you need to borrow a camera, contact Patty Jones or purchase a disposable camera and give or mail photos to Patty for scanning (see Patty's address and phone at bottom).SHOOT your photos. Your team may submit up to five photos for judging. Important: If you shoot recognizable photos of people, please have them sign HYPERLINK "http://www.gbcnv.edu/directories/images/photo_release_form.doc" a photo release form. It's a good idea to print a few and have them with you while you're shooting photos.SUBMIT photos to HYPERLINK "mailto:pattyj@gwmail.gbcnv.edu" pattyj@gwmail.gbcnv.edu by October 12 at 5:00 PM. Our webmaster will post the photos on the GBC website for on-line voting which will begin October 15. All of the GBC community is encouraged to vote for the top three submissions. VOTE! Log on to the GBC website, follow the links, and vote for your favorite photos. After voting, follow the easy steps to renew or begin a new pledge that helps fund student success at GBC. LISTEN. Winners will be announced October 20. ENJOY THE PAPARAZZI! The winning teams shall become instantly famous for at least 15 minutes! We are talking about press coverage in all counties in our enormous service area. Additionally, we will enlarge, frame and display the winning photos on all of our campuses (including photos of the winning teams). Plus, lots of the photos taken, winning or not, will be used to enhance visual richness throughout the GBC website. EAT UP as breakfast is served courtesy of Presidents Council to the winning team on a date to be decided. We hope you enjoy this friendly competition and we are really looking forward toseeing your photos! The goal is to increase participation by 20% and revenue by 10%. GBC Course Planning Time Line Julie Byrnes reported some proposed changes to timeline for the spring 2008 schedule. Presidents Council approved the following changes: Schedule should be complete and all courses planned by 10/8/07. This will start a one-week administrative review process Cut off SIS access on 10/15/07. Departments will lose their write access to SIS. From this date forward all changes require forms for documentation. Courses added after this date may not be in the printed schedule, but should be on the website. 10/19/07 10/29/07 will consist of advertising to current students so that they can have the opportunity to register early. 12/3/07 is when we will have the printed schedule delivered to the campus. Julie reported that the schedule itself will be revamped to become more usable by the student. Some things will be cut out and other information condensed. The final product will come to PC for their review. Joyce Shaw will be the point person. Julie reported that they want utilize a different system to download the information from SIS to the print schedule. Mike says that he supports this. It is better to have a good schedule coming out a little later than have an inaccurate schedule coming out sooner. SGA Update Richie LeSpade reported that the Student Government Association (SGA) had the first SOL meeting yesterday. SGA is in the process of getting club activities dates. SGA is continuing the Friday night follies. SGA is relying more on faculty to promote student activities which has been showing some positive results. SGA is hosting a blood drive on 9/28/07 in the GBC Fitness Center. Red ribbon week is week of 10/22. The pumpkin patch event will be on 10/20. The annual costume party will be held on 10/25. SGA plans a movie night on Fridays. The SGA elections are currently being held. They have 37 candidates. SGAs goal this year is to get the clubs to become a self supporting by giving them the tools they need and teaching them the process. SGA is assuming a more political role and wants to be more involved in the decisions made on campus. Jeannie Rosenthal invited Richie and any other student who may be interested in participating on the Intellectual and Cultural Enrichment (ICE) committee for student input on events that they are bringing to campus. Classified Council Update None. Grants Update Jeannie Rosenthal gave a grants update. She reported she attended a grant workshop in Washington DC on the HRSA grant. She was the only college representative in attendance. GBC should have some funds carry forward for the salary for the instructor (Mary Ray). Jeannie is looking for funding sources for geothermal. Bill met this weekend with engineers who want to become consultants for our effort to use geothermal. We need to find the flaw in the design so that we can go after the money to implement it. There is no money available to retrofit but there is money to build new. Jeannie asked everyone to think about Title III funding. Evaluation Procedure Lynette Macfarlan and Linda Uhlenkott are co-chairing the evaluation committee. Lynnette reported that the current administrative evaluation rating is not as effective as it could be. The evaluation committee will be recommending an administrator evaluation rating form and criteria for using the form that is more useful. The forms were created by Dr. Arreola. Dr. Arreola has given GBC permission to use the forms for a couple of years as a pilot at no charge in exchange for being a part of his data base to establish norms. The evaluation committee is moving forward with reviewing the faculty evaluation process. They should have information from faculty by October so that they can proceed with revamping the process. Miscellaneous Ed Nickel had an idea about what happens in a crisis. There is a lack of inter building communication and confusion on what an alarm means. A way to address this issue is to have networked computer terminals with speakers and big screens for announcing activities and receiving valuable information about an emergency. We would need at least one in each building. We could also connect it outside to the SGA marquee. Jeannie Rosenthal reported that on October 18 ICE is bringing the Nevada Ballet Theater to Elko to perform for the community a sampling of their work at 7 p.m. GBC will help with the advertising and help to find discounted rooms for the group. Ed Nickel reported he has not received feed back from the other faculty senate chairs about the cost and complexity of the iNtegrate program.
