In-service Paul Killpatrick reported he has been receiving positive feed back on the in-service activities. UNR has required reading for new students as part of their freshman orientation. The required reading gives students a common experience that is relevant to Nevada. Presidents Council discussed possibly implementing a required reading component as part of next years freshman orientation. It would create a sense of belonging which doesnt exist right now. Mike McFarlane reported that the INT classes show that students are not satisfied with the course. We need to look at how we are conducting the class. It seems like the full day orientation worked better for GBC. We also need to consider increasing the size of the class to 120 students, since that has worked in the past. The orientation classes need to focus on giving students the tools they need to persist in their education and not be a study skills class. Policies and Procedures Cliff Ferry 4.5 Computer Services Presidents Council approved the policy to include changes from Jeff Cox. 4.33 Signage Presidents Council discussed political signage and designated protest areas. More discussion will follow. Guidelines for emails were discussed as well. Presidents Council would like Susanna Dorr to remove the @ sign from all the GBC emails listed online. This will eliminate potential spam. 2.2 Strategic Planning Presidents Council approved with minor changes. 4. Miscellaneous The GBC Bylaws have been approved by the Regents at their August meeting. We will have Susanna Dorr place them on the GBC website. John Rice reported that the Foundation is focusing on endowment for new programs. The Foundations is also looking forward to the employee giving campaign that kicks off in October. Ed Nickel reported that Faculty Senate has created a new ad hoc committee on integrated seminars. One comment that has already come back from the committee is that the college has not had a discussion on where we want to go as far as distance education. We need a college wide discussion on where we are going with online classes. We will have to address this in our revision of the master plan as well. This topic fits into a lot of areas like recruitment and retention. John Rice referenced Jeremy Lords report which addresses this issue which he will email to Presidents Council. A forum on distance education should be conducted in October or February. We could make it part of the strategic planning process.
