First Generation Website Paul asked Dorothy Moore and Susanna Dorr to take on the task of creating a website for first generation students. California State University at Fresno has a website for faculty and staff who were the first in their family to go to college. Susanna Dorr reported that they used this website as the inspiration for GBCs website. Paul thinks that it is important to document what first generation faculty and students have gone through to use as a motivational tool to current and future first generation students. He would also like to include students who have already graduated to have input on the website. Dorothy Moore stated that first generation students are less likely to receive encouragement from friends and are less likely to believe we do not care about their development. We hope that a first generation website with stories from our own first generation faculty and former students will be sources of encouragement for the students to persist in their educational goals. Dorothy said that there are still questions as to how best to get the data, formatting and managing data, editing, etc. We first must determine what our definition of first generation student will be. Then create a model starting with faculty and staff experiences. We need good publishable stories that will set an example for the students. Dorothy and Susanna will present this concept to Faculty Senate at the Welcome Back. Ed Nickel says the IS 100 classes have been trying to build cohorts based on family history. This could be a place to start. We could have a peer review submission of stories and have the students do the initial review. We should find out how many faculty are first generation. John recommends forming an ad hoc committee consisting of Dorothy Moore, Susanna Dorr, Lynn Mahlberg and he to determine guidelines for the process. Miscellaneous Lynn Mahlberg reported that the crisis intervention team formed last year has developed various topics for discussion during the week of August 20. The committee will facilitate four discussions that week on substance abuse, eating healthy, finances, and personal space management. Lynn reported that activities and workshops are planned for every Thursday for fall 2007. Student Government Association will assist with some of the food items because if you have food more people will attend. Phyllis Legarza put the schedule of activities in every book bag in the service area, so special thank you goes out to her. Lynn reported that in August there will be a web seminar on coaching to promote success for first year students. She invites everyone to participate. John Rice reported that the Stephanie Schneiderman/Beer Tasting Event will be held on August 9 at 6:00 p.m. On August 13 presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be at the GBC Theater at 7:00 a.m. for a town hall meeting. Susanna Dorr has created a form online that will allow faculty to put in courses and indicate whether they want their email published. They will also be able to upload documents, link to their own website, and add additional comments that will appear under course description. It allows faculty to embellish on their courses for students to see online when they are looking at course information. The faculty can put their own description of the course that is more specific than what appears in the catalog. Mike McFarlane suggested once again that we need to get rid of the amount of paper that is generated. He recommended that electronic signatures for internal documents be implemented. Perhaps there is a way for this to occur on the website. Electronic signature/approvals would reduce time, file space and paper. We should all look for more opportunities to reduce the amount of paper being generated. (678 ! " : = H d f n ~ . > ?
