Legislative Update Paul Killpatrick reported that the legislature is in its final hours. The Capital Improvement Projects have been approved for the most part. Nothing has been happening with the clinic bill and airport bill. Policies and Procedures 4.7 Host Accounts Carl Diekhans reported that there are a couple of changes to the host account policy. One change is that gratuities may not be more that twenty percent of the bill. An addition to the policy is that the president is authorized to establish institutionally funded host accounts and establish host account spending limits for each host account. Currently, each vice president has a host account. Star Thompson says it is a good idea to establish an account master file input form for establishing new host accounts. It would have to be approved by the president. The president would authorize additional increases to host accounts. Host accounts are audited every year. Host accounts are funded with non-state money and are for entertainment and gifts only. For clarification Presidents Council added wording that items for promotional purposes may not be charged to host account. A promotional account needs to be established. Presidents Council approved the changes to the host account policy. Presidents Council approved the creation of a promotional account that would be funded by transferring $7,500 from the institutional reserve for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. 6xx Students Right to Know Lynn Mahlberg reported the policy is pretty straightforward. Federal law requires colleges to disclose completion rates for all first-time, degree-seeking, full-time students and how long it took them to obtain their degrees. This information is included in the college catalog and on the webpage. Presidents Council approved the policy. Accreditation Update Mike McFarlane no updates. Crisis Intervention Team Lynn Mahlberg reported that people from student services, academic affairs and administration came together as part of a crisis intervention team last spring. Active GBC members are: Pat Anderson, Julie Byrnes, Wendy Charlebois, Pat Collins, Mary Doucette, Lynn Mahlberg, Karen Martin, Stacie Potter, Mary Ray, and Phil Smith. The Crisis Intervention Team was formed to address the high number of suicides in Elko County and the effect on the campus community. Team members have been working with the Elko County Suicide Prevention Network. Many of the Elko team members attended a two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), in which seventy people from a variety of agencies in Elko County attended; and for GBC, in addition to the Elko team members, Kevin Laxalt and Mary Swetich from Ely as well as Sarah Hinton from Battle Mountain also attended. For this fall, the Crisis Intervention Team is planning workshops on a variety of topics. The week prior to the first week of instruction, as well as the first week, the following topics will be presented in Griswold Hall: "High on Life" (Drug Intervention), "Eat, Drink and be Merry (Nutrition), "Deal or No Deal" (Budgeting) and "My Space" (Boundaries). The times/days are to be determined. The second week of school, the team will facilitate discussions at two different times (12:15-1:30 - College Community Center and 6:30 in the evening at Griswold). All sessions are open to the college community. The team has discussed the possibility for an emergency fund. Lynn will work with the Foundation to set up an account. Also, because of the time involved in facilitating the weekly workshops, there has been discussion of Faculty Senate Members using this in lieu of committee work. Miscellaneous Paul Killpatrick asked the status of making freshman orientation into a one-credit course instead of a half-credit course. Paul would like to see some effort to make it a one-credit course for retention. Ed Nickel suggested having a general education orientation class. If your program has an orientation class, then you do not have to take the general education orientation class. Scheduling is a challenge for everyone. Paul would like a pilot program for spring. We always have to think of ways to connect people to the campus. Paul Killpatrick reported that he wants to create an archive photographs and images policy. Original archived and digitally stored photographs and images are the property of and controlled by ɫ. Media Services can provide a digital copy of a photograph or image to an individual for a fee. Original photos will not be relinquished to any person. Paul Killpatrick will be attending the Al Huber memorial service tomorrow in Jackpot. Lynn Mahlberg reported that faculty advisors for the summer will be advising from the Admission Advising Career Center. All the openings have been filled with faculty volunteers. John Rice provided a copy of the Mission Statement. We have a good mission, but it was not concise. The mission statement committee broke it down: 1. mission statement; 2. values statement; and 3. vision. Vision statements can be lengthy. It would be a good idea to reconvene the mission statement committee in the fall. John Rice reported that on May 30 at 2:30 p.m. in Berg Conference Room, Reverend Jackie Leonard will present the GBC Foundation with a check for 2.37 million dollars. The bequest will be used for the community center expansion. The building will be renamed the Paul and Gwen Leonard Center for Student Life. The Leonards are originally from Elko. We will need approval from the Board of Regents at the August meeting to start construction. The project will need some oversight from public works. Mike McFarlane reiterated that the $25 fee for the dual credit instruction on high school campuses is at the presidents discretion. If we do that for Pahrump, we need to extend it district-wide. We need to look at the numbers and budget and see what is best for the college on how much we charge for dual credit courses.
