GREAT BASIN COLLEGE PRESIDENTS COUNCIL November 23, 2005 PRESENT: Paul Killpatrick, Carl Diekhans, Mike McFarlane, Lynn Mahlberg, Danny Gonzales, Lisa Heise, John Rice, Linda Uhlenkott Approval of Minutes The minutes of the Presidents Council meeting on November 16, 2005 were approved. Strategic Plan Danny Gonzales reported that each area is in the process of updating its action plans for the Strategic Plan. He suggested that as we are preparing our plans we keep in mind Pahrump so that we can add it to the Strategic Plan when and if it is approved. Pahrump Discussion Paul Killpatrick reported another group is going to Las Vegas next week. Lisa Heise and Chris Johnson of the GBC Foundation will be going on Thursday. Paul and Carl Diekhans plan to attend Pahrumps advisory board meeting on Tuesday. Linda Uhlenkott, Mike McFarlane, and Lynn Mahlberg will visit Pahrump on Tuesday. The service area still needs to be clarified, so the Board of Regents agenda item may need to be changed. Child Center Calendar Mike McFarlane reported that the Child Center follows the Elko County School Districts schedule. Presidents Council discussed whether the Child Center should follow the GBC schedule. It was suggested that Carol Ford should attend the next PC meeting. Student Services Annual Plan Lynn Mahlberg submitted Student Services updated action plans to PC. It is a work in progress and does not contain anything about Pahrump, involves more than the Student Services area and overlaps with various other departments. Bringing in Pahrump will have an impact on our staff. Document imaging will be very important because all permanent records will have to be housed here. In-Kind Donations Lisa Heise reported that the Foundation is finding it difficult to get people to comply with the requirement to notify the Foundation of any in-kind donations and grants. How do we get people to comply with this requirement? We need to figure out what the other institutions are doing for faculty to comply. The Foundation has compliance factors that they need to produce for audit purposes. The Foundation needs to be involved so that some sort of coordination occurs and to ensure paperwork is done correctly. This allows for the Foundation to account for donations accurately so we know what the programs cost. Lisa, Linda, Carl and Paul will talk to their counterparts at other institutions to see what they are doing. Miscellaneous Linda Uhlenkott gave a Faculty Senate update. Three new courses were approved with minor changes including ELM 130, Low Voltage Systems II, SUR 330, Introduction to Least Squares Adjustment, and MATH 333, Number Theory for Secondary School Teachers. All Underground Miner Training Courses were tabled for further clarification on the nature of the classes. She reported that the Faculty Senate approves the concept of GBC assuming administrative oversight of the Pahrump Valley Center contingent on establishing memos of understanding between GBC and CCSN, Nye County, the Nye County School District, and other organizations in the region. Further studies on the fiscal impacts need to be conducted and reported. Faculty Senate also has some concerns about how a Foundation in Pahrump would operate and suggested that any Foundation established down there should be part of GBC rather than separate. Dr. Killpatrick interviewed Mary Swetich and Mike Mryhow last week and got their thoughts about Pahrump. They both agree that there will be challenges but support the concept of GBC running the Pahrump Valley Center. Mardell Wilkins said that the GBC Holiday Party planning committee has been meeting weekly for a few weeks and feels sure that this years event will be fun for all. The party will be on December 9, 2005 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Terrace. Lynn Mahlberg reported that H.A.B.I.T.A.T. will be having a midnight breakfast on December 13, 2005 at Griswold and the apartments for the students who will be up all night studying for finals. Dr. Killpatrick and Lynn will be there to help. John Rice reported that the College Focus will be coming out next week. He will be on ELKO-Live on Monday to try to get people to register now for spring.
