Policies & Procedures GBC Bylaws Review for Action Student Success Lynn Mahlberg said that with research from Dorothy Moore and Lijuan Zhai, we are finally at a point now that we can start comparing how GBC compares with the national trends on student success and retention. Dorothy and Lijuan have been working together to pull all of the information into a presentation they presented to College Council. The data is preliminary; but gives us an idea where we should begin, what we need to do for change to occur, and what factors ensure student success. Dorothy Moore stated that GBC is currently taking a different look at student retention. GBC has great student leadership. We have been working on planning and assessment, and make data driven decisions. She also reported that campuses with high retention rates had programs based on best practices in place. The more successful campuses had student success pervading the campus culture. One of the main reasons that students drop out is that their expectations do not match the students perceived experiences. This can be both internally (within the college) and externally (life experience outside of college). Lijuan Zhai presented GBC preliminary data showing that GBC appears to following the national trend on retention and persistence rates. Linda Uhlenkott invited Dorothy and Lijuan to present this information at the Faculty Senate meeting on January 19, 2007 in GTA 130. Spring In-Service Danny Gonzales presented the draft in-service calendar for spring. Presidents Council discussed whether to make it mandatory for at least adjuncts to attend the student learner outcomes and measurement sessions. Mike McFarlane said that we certainly want to encourage faculty and adjuncts to attend these. The evening time may be a better bet to get the majority of adjuncts to attend. Linda Uhlenkott stated that faculty and adjuncts should be able to take their syllabi to someone if they have already completed the syllabi. We should have a mechanism in place for those people who are already complying. Danny Gonzales said that faculty feels this is a shotgun approach by being required to attend if they have already completed their syllabus. With Pahrump, there still are no student learner outcomes for the adjuncts. We may have to require the syllabus first before a contract is issued. Danny reported that progress has been made in the past couple of years. Mike feels departments need to monitor themselves. If we had some sort of reporting mechanism and a database of who is complying and who is not, it would be a better tracking mechanism. Please let Danny know what we would like to see at the in-service. Ed Nickel will be conducting pod training, and Lisa Frazier will be conducting training for the upgraded WebCT platform. Linda Uhlenkott would like to see if all of the Faculty Senate Committees could meet sometime maybe on Friday. Winter Closure 2006 Carl Diekhans reported that his office will be updating the Winter Closure form for 2006. The form is only for professional employees to fill out. To use the form, the professional employee and their supervisor should keep track of their accrued comp time. Use the form only for accrued comp time. If a professional employee is using annual leave during the winter closure, then they submit the regular leave slip. Classified employees will follow the normal leave procedures and use the regular leave slip. If a classified employee has comp time the State mandates that comp time be used first, then annual leave. Carls office will be sending out a GBC-All notice to explain the procedure to everyone. Distinguished Alumni Award Paul Killpatrick reported he would like to start a distinguished alumni award beginning with the 2007 commencement. Presidents Council will start developing a procedure. He will ask the Mountain State Association of Community College presidents what their institution is currently doing. He would like March 15, 2007 to be the deadline for nominations. Lynn Mahlberg said a list of all graduates would help. Faculty Senate Update Item deferred to next week. Miscellaneous Carl Diekhans reported that the internal auditors will be here this week. They have been focusing on Human Resources and Grants. The State of Nevada NRS mandates that all professional and adjunct employees sign a loyalty oath, something that GBC has not done in the past two years. GBC will be instating the loyalty oath immediately. We will have all of the new employees sign the loyalty oath, perhaps during in-service for faculty. We will have notaries available for free to notarize the oath. Lynn Mahlberg reported that the Regents Scholar award deadline is December 1. Lynn Mahlberg reported the GBC attendees of the American Council of Education Womens Network conference in Reno last October wanted to continue discussions to start a chapter of ACE at GBC. To that end, a mixer has been scheduled for December 7 from 3:00 5:00 p.m. It will enable people to meet and mix with people outside of their department. Mardell Wilkins reported that the planning committee for the GBC Christmas Party has been meeting once a week finalizing all of the details for this years party on December 9. The party will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Stockmens Show Lounge. This year the President will be hosting a prime rib buffet (guests will be charged $15). RSVPs are mandatory, so call Dorinda Friez to reserve your spot by November 30. GBC will be the venue for the Christmas in the Night Time Sky this year. This years fireworks will begin at nightfall on December 2. The best place to view the fireworks will probably be the amphitheater. There will be portable bathrooms available outside; only the community center will be open to the public. Other sponsors are Terry Hritz (KENV), Kimberlys Nursery, James Q. Winer, and Barrick Goldstrike. Sponsors are asking the community to bring an unwrapped gift for a child to support Toys for Tots.
