Policies & Procedures GBC Bylaws Continued review of the GBC bylaws by the ad hoc committee. Student Success According to the Ready for Life Initiative in Nevada Communities, Lynn Mahlberg reported that they provided the following: "Too few young people are ready by age 25 for college, work, and life. Many of Nevada's young people are unprepared for the challenges of young adulthood. Consider the following sobering statistics: Nevada ranks LAST (among all 50 states and the District of Columbia) in the percentage of: *18-24 year olds who are not high school graduates *16-19 year olds who are not enrolled in school and not working *18-24 year olds who have an associate or bachelor degree For every 100 Nevada students that begin high school, 62 graduate in four years; 27 immediately enroll in higher education; 18 are still enrolled the following year; and only 10 complete a degree in four years." This is exactly what we as an institution have been talking about the past year and why we felt that when we talk about student retention, we are talking about student success. Who are GBC students? Dr. Dorothy Moore began researching on "who are community college students" on a national level, which she has presented in PC previously and will present next week with Lijuan Zhai statistics on who GBC students in conjunction with Dorothy's research. Dr. Jay Larson in College Council presented his findings from his dissertation on what it takes to get from research to implementation for student success and involvement. Dr. Larson defended his dissertation 16 years ago, and he says his experience since then has not changed his views: the important aspects of college life were friendships with peers, faculty, staff and administration and participation with fellow students and faculty in research projects and extra-curricular activities. The past six years at ɫ, he has felt that students need to feel "I am glad I'm here. He feels that this is a great opportunity and has tried to mentor to those who would ask and get students into leadership positions, where they could have an experience that would allow them to leave saying: "You know. I'm proud I was here and proud of what I accomplished." Last year, Dr. Larson was asked to present to Peninsula College in northern Washington and also Lake Washington Technical College as they had an opportunity to create a Bachelor of Applied Science program. In preparing, Dr. Larson put together a short power point on "What Education Should Do." "In a nutshell, these are the things: meet the needs of the stakeholders, provide input (knowledge, skills, values, attitudes, and role models. Education should produce graduates who are contributors and innovative leaders." Dr. Larson said that business say that applicants must be problem solvers and critical thinkers. They say that these are the biggest weaknesses. With the statistics that Lynn just read, Dr. Larson said that "a lot of students in Nevada haven't had an experience of completing anything, a term paper, a degree, or any other thing, so producing graduates should be our focus. Not just graduates who walk away, but who actually contribute to the community, who are positive role models for their children and innovative people." Our stakeholders are our graduates, our alumni and anyone who has an interest in the success of our students (community, employers, etc.). In listening to a number of speakers the past couple years (some of whom we hope to bring to GBC), the paradigm is shifting from students being treated as customers to being treated as human beings. High touch doesn't mean being treated like a customer, it means being treated as you would like to be treated. Dr. Larson shared two books: 1. THE COURAGE TO TEACH, Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life by Parker J. Palmer; and, 2. Ten Traits of Highly Effective Teachers: How to Hire, Coach, and Mentor Successful Teachers," by Elaine K. McEwan. He suggested as an institution, we might want to purchase them for everyone. There will be more discussion on the concepts and the possibility of bringing in Louis Schmier and Dr. Christina Shorall for Welcome Back Week to conduct student success workshops. Dr. Uhlenkott suggested that Parker J. Palmer come to the college to speak. Making a difference does matter. Dr. Larson shared a letter from a former student (whom he taught in Idaho) who just passed the Michigan Bar thanking him for helping students to "realize our potential and our abilities to succeed." Winter Closure 2006 Item deferred until next week. Great Basin Native American Market Danny Gonzales reminded PC that the Native American Market is coming up, and he wanted to ensure that the coordination of the event has been assigned to someone. He reported that Jay Larson indicated that his class could work on the marketing and other aspects of this event as a project. Miscellaneous Danny Gonzales asked that if PC had any other ideas for in-service for fall to please let him know immediately. (39:;U= > ?
