Policies & Procedures GBC Bylaws Review for Action Grants Update Jeannie Rosenthal reported that she has received a request for letters of interest from the Nevada Public Education Foundation (NPEF) to support the Ready for Life Initiative in smaller Nevada Communities. NPEF recognizes that different communities have distinct needs and thus the implementation and replication of Ready for Life will look different across the state. The grant focuses on helping youth become ready for life through successful transitions at each developmental stage during their educational careers in Nevada and on. Since Ready for Life is a collaborative cross-agency effort, PC suggested that it should be an application from the school district with GBC as a partner. Applications are due by November 6. Lynn Mahlberg said it would be good to explore collaboration with the school district for this grant since we are trying to matriculate high school students to college. Jeannie Rosenthal reported that the Nevada Arts Council (NAC) will facilitate a two-week statewide residency by the Utah Repertory Dance Theater (RDT). The NAC is looking for hosts. As a host GBC would have to arrange for facilities, room and board for the dancers. Anything that we charge for admittance would defray the costs. The RDT would be in Elko on November 26 27. The GBC Theater is available on those days. GBC would also have to provide the music. Jeannie reported that the ICE committee will be discussing this opportunity at their next committee meeting. Presidents Council agreed that the opportunity sounds like it is worth pursuing. Classified Council Update Annie Ulrich gave statistics on the number of classes that the classified staff are taking this semester. Classified staff enrolled in fifty-two classes this semester which shows that they are certainly using their Grant-in-Aid. Annie reported that the Chili Cook Off made $402 for the Classified Scholarship account. The next Classified Council meeting is scheduled for this Friday. Faculty Senate Update Linda Uhlenkott gave a report of the last Faculty Senate meeting. She reported that the Academic Standards Committee recommended to the Senate that all faculty begin taking regular attendance in all of their classes; and further, to begin documenting on the grade rosters the last date of attendance for any student who receives a grade of withdraw, fail, or incomplete. Implementing this change would put GBC into compliance with federal requirements. Presidents Council approved this change. The Administrative Faculty Evaluation Form was passed by Faculty Senate. Lynn Mahlberg noticed that the needs improvement was still a choice under the employee competencies section. The Board of Regents handbook allows us only four choices: excellent, commendable, satisfactory, and unsatisfactory. PC recommended the removal of the needs improvement category so that we are in line with Board policy. Linda will have Annie Ulrich make this change to the form. The Wizard of Oz and Conflict Resolution Stacie Potter did a presentation on conflict resolution. She provided strategies for resolving disagreements and conflicts using the Wizard of Oz concept. Conflict strategies are related to the following: the Lion (withdrawing), the Witch (forcing), the Tin Man (smoothing), Dorothy (compromising), and the Scarecrow (confronting). It is good to know what category one falls into as well as the person with which you have a conflict. The Lion lacks courage to stand up for what they believe and prefers to withdraw rather deal with conflict. The Witch will try to overcome the opponent at any cost. The Witch feels only her goals are important, and can be harmful to an organization. The Tin Man feels that the relationship is most important and will put his own goals on hold rather than hurt someones feelings. Dorothy seeks to compromise and seeks solutions. She is the middle ground. She is willing to sacrifice part of her goals and relationships in order to find agreement for the common good. The Scarecrow views conflicts as problems to be confronted and solved. He seeks a solution that satisfies both parties. The Scarecrow is not satisfied until all tensions and negative feelings have been fully resolved. In closing her presentation Stacie said it is important to never deal with a conflict that is volatile or abusive. Also, it is important to never lose control yourself. Stacie did an excellent job with her presentation on conflict resolution. Lynn Mahlberg stated we can see why Stacie is such a good housing coordinator. Miscellaneous None. (289:AB + , .
