Policies & Procedures Deferred to next week. Nye County Update Lynn Mahlberg introduced Tony Villalobos who is visiting this week from the Pahrump Valley Center. Tony will be in Elko the first part of this week and then he will be traveling to Ely later in the week. Tony has a positive attitude about the transition to GBC. He feels that attention needs to be focused on counseling and financial services, but all in all, things are going quite well. GBC 40th Anniversary GBC will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. Dr. Killpatrick asked that everyone be thinking of ideas to celebrate this milestone. GBC Commencement Discussions have been ongoing about whether to have commencement at the convention center or here on campus, and whether to hold commencement on Friday or Saturday. John Rice said that one of the main problems with having commencement at the convention center is the sound system and overcrowding. Janice King said that these concerns have been discussed. The commencement committee has also discussed giving out tickets. If we have commencement on campus, we need to cost out bleachers and have an alternate site such as Centennial Gymnasium in case of inclement weather. Presidents Council discussed possible locations on campus and will tour the campus after the meeting. Presidents Council is strongly leaning towards having it on Friday morning on campus, pending cost estimate. Linda spent time in Pahrump on Wednesday. It is important to keep communication clear with all of them. We should consider pairing staff members in Pahrump with someone from here as a resource for questions. Update on Regents Awards No update at this time. The Regents Scholar Award is November 1. Miscellaneous John Rice reported that he was notified by the Chancellors office that a town hall meeting has been scheduled for December 4 for Elko. We should invite the GBC Advisory Board to attend the meeting. Linda Uhlenkott reported that the Executive Faculty Senate Committee had their meeting yesterday. They are sorting through policies and making sure they get put on the Presidents webpage. Robert Hannu is a great addition to the Interactive Video department and is doing a great job in his new position. The Interactive Video department is still short on facilitators. Lynn Mahlberg reported that there were concerns at the beginning of semester of the computer system going down from too many hits. A system has been purchased that enables a 25% increase of what the system can handle during peak times. There have been approximately 4.5 million hits system-wide. Lynn Mahlberg reported that next week is Red Ribbon Week 2006. This years events are sponsored by the Student Government Association. October 23, 2006 Free Tailgate Barbecue October 24, 2006 Wear Red Day October 25, 2006 Drunken Goggle Driving Obstacle Course October 26, 2006 - Kids Carnival and the Fourth Annual Costume Party Lynn Mahlberg reported that the Elko County School District is hosting a Senior Round Table at GBC next week. Six hundred high school seniors will be here on October 25 to tour the campus and given information to smooth their transition into college. Lynn Mahlberg reported that College Goal Sunday is expanding sites for 2007. Elko, Winnemucca, and Pahrump will be the GBC sites for 2007. We are trying to get Ely in the loop. Presidents Council discussed establishing one account for items that we give away on a continuing basis. We would have to use non-state dollars for this account. It would seem that Lynn Mahlberg would be the best person to manage the account. Presidents Council agreed that an account should be made available for giveaways, promotions and recruiting. Lynn Mahlberg reported that Adrianna Mendez is doing an excellent job in her recruiting position. She has been making the rounds across the state. She has also been doing recruitment in Idaho and Utah. We have a full recruitment schedule right now with one recruiter and Tammy Robinson. Lynn stated that she does not want to burn Adrianna out. We do have money in the budget for a recruiter in Pahrump. Generally, we have one recruiter that takes care of everything. Mike McFarlane stated there is a possibility to have a Career and Technical Education recruiter who the mines will pay for, which could help. Pahrump Valley High School has a counselor who is originally from Wells. Lynn Mahlberg is pleased that they have a counselor who is supportive of GBC. Paul Killpatrick would like to see job descriptions for the Pahrump Valley Center Director, the webmaster, and the Vice President for Administrative Services by next week. (289: .
