Policies & Procedures- Cliff Ferry and the ad hoc GBC Bylaws Committee continued the revisions to the GBC Bylaws. Certain sections will be compared to NSHE code to ensure the wording is correct. The Grants Procedures were handed out for review. Presidents Council will vote to approve the Grants Procedures at the next Presidents Council meeting. Nye County Update Dr. Mike McFarlane reported that Bob Hannu is going to Pahrump today. Carl Diekhans reported that the student services counter in the Pahrump Valley Center will cost approximately $3,000 to $5,000. Carl reported that the state fire marshal has the final say as to what is needed for the remodel. Dr. Killpatrick and Dr. Linda Uhlenkott will be going to Pahrump next Wednesday. Dr. Killpatrick reported that he has received a copy of the Land Transfer Bill from Vicki Hafen Scott. Paul forwarded the information to the Board of Regents. We are in the process of finding a consultant to conduct the survey in Pahrump. Mike McFarlane said the enrollment numbers have been as expected. Another survey should show that a new building is absolutely necessary. Pahrump is a large community that does not have any other facilities besides the High Tech Center. The high school is growing as well. Gear-Up Update Lynn Mahlberg reported that last week she attended the statewide Gear-Up council meeting. This year marks the end of the fifth year for the first group of students being tracked. The grant takes a cohort of students and tracks them from 7th grade until graduation. If the students are successful they will qualify for scholarships for college. Funding for the next group of students has already been granted ($18 million). The Gear-Up Grant has been a highly successful grant. The focus of the grant is getting low income students interested in coming to college. Parents must also be committed and must sign a contract. The students have access to tutoring to help them to succeed. The grant has business support as well as legislative support. The grant has approximately 2200 students participating this year, but for the next go-around, there will be approximately 5700 students. Students will be visiting GBC from around the state. Through mentoring and tutoring the students, accountability and outcomes have been exceeded. Miscellaneous Lynn Mahlberg stated that she and Julie Byrnes, Pat Collins, and Phil Smith will be attending the National American Conference for Counseling Association in Reno. Topics of the conference will be disruptive student behavior, legal issues, and the impact of advertising. They will bring back the information to share with those who could not attend. Carl Diekhans reported that the veterans should be moving into the clinic shortly. Mardell will schedule a meeting with the Elko Clinic committee for later in October to possibly coordinate with their grand opening. Lynn Mahlberg clarified that anyone interested in attending the Nevada Womens Network/ACE workshop in Reno in October needs to handle their own travel arrangements and registration. The cost would come out of the respective areas budget. Mike McFarlane reported that the dual credit classes in Elko County have started out well and he anticipates that the numbers will only grow. The counselors at some of the schools are not aware of the dual credit offerings. Lynn says what we see happening is that the counselors at the high schools are not aware of who is registered for the dual credit classes. Mike says we are working on better communications between GBC and the schools.
