Nye County Update No report. Policies & Procedures- Cliff Ferry and Presidents Council continued the review of the Policy and Procedures handbook and made additional changes to the location of certain sections. Cliff asked that everyone review section 9.4 for discussion at the next Presidents Council meeting. College Council Update Lynn Mahlberg provided a draft copy of minutes of the last College Council meeting on September 8. Shared governance was discussed what does shared governance mean and what types of shared governance are occurring on campus currently. Dorothy Moore has completed her research on what practices the other community colleges are doing for retention and student success. She distributed the Eye on the Prize research handout during the meeting. Dorothys research shows that each of us has an opportunity to make a difference with the students we encounter. It is up to us how meaningful each interaction with students will be. Lynn said that the spring 2008 community college conference will be held at GBC and we could have presentation at the conference showing the national findings as well as GBC findings. Lynn Mahlberg reported that Student Life and SGA are focusing on leadership this year. The Student Life Specialist and SGA leaders have attended conferences and seminars on leadership. They have been doing presentations around campus on what they have learned at the conferences. The next College Council meeting will be on November 3, 2006. Miscellaneous GBCs system attorney suggested changes to the legal language of the Key Control Policy. The language now states that employees may have to pay a fee, not will have to pay a fee when a key is lost or not returned. Paul Killpatrick presented the updated Key Control Policy to Presidents Council for approval. Presidents Council approved changes to the Key Control Policy. Faculty Senate Update Linda Uhlenkott reported that the 2009-2010 academic calendar was approved by Faculty Senate. Mardell Wilkins sent the approved calendar to the system office. Faculty Senate approved a prioritized list of new positions that did not include any backfill positions. John Rice said he has talked to Lynn and Paul about a music program. He feels that a good healthy music department would be a boon for our enrollment. There is interest in music classes for non-music majors. Mike McFarlane suggested creating two priority lists: one for positions that support programs we already offer and another list for positions for classes we want to offer in the future. Linda reported that the Distance Education Committee supports Lisa Fraziers pursuit of a video-streaming server as well as the choice of WebCT 6 for the upgrade of WebCT. Lisa would be the support for the video-streaming software. Her department will pay for $15,000 for the video-streaming server. An additional $10,000 was requested. Presidents Council approved the Faculty Senate report as an information item. Linda Uhlenkott reported that there have been technical problems with the IAV in Lundberg 114. Mike McFarlane said that we are in the process of updating the equipment in the interactive rooms, but it takes time and money. For instance, it would take about $15,000 to update GTA 130 to interactive for the faculty senate meetings. Carl Diekhans created a spreadsheet that lists the distribution of fees to non-state accounts sorted by centers. The spreadsheet should be updated annually. Funds available are as follows: Student Access (used for scholarships only) - $141,750) General Improvement Fee (used for general equipment that is student oriented) - $213,788 Tech Fee (used for technical equipment) - $192,000 Capital Improvement Fee (used for campus improvements) - $261,750 Student Government - $56,700 Presidents Council recommended that each year we should take money off of the top of the General Improvement Fees and the Tech Fees for improving the smart classrooms. It was recommended that we use only one report for Pahrump enrollments that includes all distance education and online classes. We dont want the wrong information being passed around. A Call for Nominations has been received from the system office for the 2006-2007 Regents Awards. All nominations should be submitted to the system office no later than November 30, 2006.
