Foundation Employee Campaign Patty Jones reported that the Foundation has an excellent employee campaign planned for October 4 14, 2005. She reported that the Chancellor has made it clear that in order to achieve excellence, private support is necessary. The Foundation would like to challenge Presidents Council to support the employee campaign. They would like to report back 100% support by Presidents Council. There are some exciting new options for people to choose from, so it will not hurt to take another look to renew your pledge. This is an innovative campaign this year and the Foundation is striving for new levels of support. Employability Certification Lynn Mahlberg reported that she met with Chris Chairsell and Bret Murphy yesterday to discuss contract training and how best to package it so that the employer knows exactly what they are getting and the college can get credit for the training. We are currently using the work key system in conjunction with DACUM. Bret Murphy will be attending a train-the-trainer session and bring it back to the occupational faculty. We would like to get Pat Collins involved. We are using the Louisiana, Kansas and Kentucky models to see how it fits into NSHE. The only concern would be that the industry that we cater to (mining) is unique. The discussion is continuing and Lynn will bring back any further information to Presidents Council. Christmas Party Planning Paul Killpatrick charged Mardell Wilkins with coordinating the Christmas party planning. She will begin forming a planning committee. The Christmas Party will be held on December 9, 2005 at the Terrace. International Students John Rice has been receiving calls from organizations who market to international students. He has been telling these organizations that the eventual recruitment of international students is in our strategic plan but we are not at the point of being aggressive about it. Lynn Mahlberg says we have our name out there but are not ready to begin an aggressive campaign because there are other components other than housing to think about. GBC doesnt have the funding to do it at this time. When Tammy Staley comes back from Japan we can get a better idea of the international market, at least in Japan. Camera Policy Carl Diekhans will have a new Camera Surveillance Policy ready for Presidents Councils review in the near future. He will email the policy to PC for their review. Request for Fundraiser from Phi Beta Lambda Presidents Council reviewed a request from Phi Beta Lambda to hold periodic fundraisers. Their plan is to sell ice cream and yogurt from a mobile vending cart. Presidents Council approves the request on the following conditions: that PBL check out any licensing or business permits that they might need; whether they will be charging sales tax; and do they require any Health Department permits. PBL addressed the issues: no business permits required; no sales tax will be charged; and no special health permits are necessary. Presidents Council approved the request. Miscellaneous The Great Basin Balloon Festival free balloon ride drawings for faculty, classified, and SGA will be happening this week. The balloon glow will be held in Chilton Circle on Friday, September 24. There will be four balloons at the balloon glow, and also a reggae band. Food and beverages will be sold. Carl Diekhans reported that the state has a contract with some wireless companies for discounts for college use and for personal use. Cingular, AT&T Wireless, Sprint and Horizon offer up to a 15 to 20% discount for home or work. Carl Diekhans reported that in an effort to make management more aware of what is being documented during the financial audits, he will be sending copies of last years MDNA audit to the Vice Presidents. The federal government says that management must report on the status of how we are doing in the financial audit for accountability purposes. Linda Uhlenkott said that there is some resistance from faculty to the idea of assessment at the end of general education program because of the concern that students will not put their best effort into it. We might want to think about an award system for taking the test. Faculty are worried that it will become standardized test. Committee is meeting on Friday. Linda Uhlenkott mentioned that there is some resistance to the use of the first name and last name initial email address because some feel it is unprofessional. They can still use their old email addresses if they choose, but when signing onto a GBC computer they must use the new user name. Linda Uhlenkott requested Mike McFarlane come to Faculty Senate to address the reorganization of the support staff in Administration. It poses a potential voting problem. Mike will attend the meeting and address this issue. Dr. Killpatrick will attend too. Lynn Mahlberg reported that September 21, 2005 is Constitution Day and GBC will have Dr. Jack Smith conducting a brown bag lecture entitle The constitution, could we have done it better? Lynn Mahlberg reported that College Goal Sunday will be held on January 29, 2006. She also reported that our displaced family from Katrina is adjusting and doing fine. We may be receiving more from Salt Lake Community College. SLCC has indicated that they will provide free transportation for any displaced student in their area to come to GBC if they are interested. Carl Diekhans discovered that the architect that designed the campus for the Reynolds project submitted the project to a national competition and won. We are trying to get a copy of the award to place somewhere on campus. Danny Gonzales reported that the Great Basin Festival begins on Monday. He was also happy to announce that Wanell Donnelli has accepted the Administrative Assistant IV position in his office. She will begin work on September 26.
