Nye County Update Paul Killpatrick and Mike McFarlane will be in Pahrump for the rural roundtable that the Chancellor is having on September 25. Mike McFarlane reported that it was helpful to the PVC staff that Janie Moore and Wanell Donnelli spent time down there last week to clear up some issues. Pahrump currently has 170 FTE without dual enrollment. Linda Uhlenkott suggested having the Faculty Senate meetings interactive with Pahrump whenever possible. Policies & Procedures- Cliff Ferry has been reviewing the policy and procedure manual. He invited discussion on how often the procedures should be updated and who is responsible. Each department is responsible for keeping its policies and procedures updated and making changes to policies as they occur. Any changes and additions to the policy and procedures must have the final approval of Presidents Council. Cliff will review the policies on the website and compare them to the ones in the policy and procedures binder. Presidents Council reviewed the location of sections within the guide and made some changes. Cliff recommended that the strategic plan be substituted into the Goals and Objectives section. The Mission section should be redone. Presidents Council elected John Rice to head an ad hoc committee to work on the mission statement. The committee should have representatives from faculty, administration, students and classified. The policy and procedure manual should have a more consistent voice in the writing. Cliff will try to address the bylaws first. Accreditation A progress report addressing the recommendations from Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities is due on October 20, 2006. Mike McFarlane reported that he will discuss in a letter to Northwest the progress GBC has made in student achievement, learning outcomes and assessment, and educational assessment. American Council on Education/ Nevada Womens Network Conference Lynn Mahlberg reported that she and Margaret Puccinelli have been involved with the American Council on Education/Nevada Womens Network for Higher Education. Former University of Nevada Reno President John Lilley originally proposed to all presidents building a Nevada Womens network. To that end, there will be an ACE/Nevada Womens Network Conference in Reno on October 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Silver Legacy is offering the state rate on Thursday evening. The conference costs $25 to register. Lynn and Margaret will be receiving more information about the speakers. The conference will be open to faculty, staff, and students. The Nevada Womens Network encourages women to get into leadership roles. We hope to have six to eight people attending from GBC. File System for Office of the President Mardell Wilkins is in the process of organizing the files in the Presidents office. Mardell will be gathering information regarding what files the Vice Presidents offices keep and what files the Presidents offices around the state are keeping. Governor Guinn Appreciation Paul Killpatrick received a request from the Chancellor requesting the NSHE Foundations each donate $1,000 for the Guinn Appreciation Reception that NSHE is hosting the evening of October 12, 2006. John Rice indicated that a request of that nature would have to go before the Foundation Executive Board for approval. Miscellaneous Mike McFarlane and Carl Diekhans presented some statistics about the bookstore. Out of 500 titles, only 4% have problems. Some of the reasons for the problems in the bookstore are: Shipping problems Faculty ordering process Publishing problems Bookstore procedures Sharp increase in enrollment and book sales Carl Diekhans reported that the modular is in place in Wendover. It should take about 4 weeks to install the interactive video equipment. Carl Diekhans reported that the EIT building will be delayed. The completion date now will be fall 2008. Lynn Mahlberg will have a report next week on College Council. Lynn Mahlberg reported that this week is National Suicide Prevention week. With the assistance of Mary Doucette and friends, purple and turquoise suicide prevention ribbons were made. The ribbon "serves as a reminder that suicide is an issue we need to talk about." Ms. Jan Bassier is the Elko County Local Contact. She has arranged for various informational and training meetings. Student Services, Pat Anderson, Wendy Charlebois, and Mary Doucette were present at a special Suicide Prevention Training presented by Daela Gibson, Outreach Coordinator for the Crisis Call Center in Reno. There will be a memorial walk on October 21 in memory of those who have died by suicide. There will be a budget meeting on September 22. Carl needs everyones narratives for the meeting.
