In-Kind Gift Acceptance Lisa Heise, Interim Director of the Foundation, reiterated the importance of checking with Foundation before accepting any gift. There are many different kinds of transactions when dealing with gift acceptance and the Internal Revenue Service is involved with every one of them, especially exchange transactions. We do not want to give everyone the idea that their donation is tax deductible, when in fact it may not be. When an item is donated, it is the donors responsibility to have the item evaluated for their tax purposes, not the Colleges. Before accepting an item, we must be sure we have a use for the item. The Foundation is tightening up their gift acceptance policy. We do not want to become a warehouse for donated items. We are expecting donations in the technical area so the technical faculty needs to be educated in accepting donations. Presidents Council suggested that Lisa Heise, Star Thompson, and Bret Murphy comprise a committee that will be notified when a gift is donated. They will determine whether we can or cannot accept the gift. Please get in the habit of notifying these individuals so the proper procedures can be followed. GBC Advisory Board Meeting Agendas Mike McFarlane recommended that the way in which the Presidential Advisory Board meetings are conducted should be changed. The meetings currently consist of Presidents Council advising the board members. We monopolize the time and never hear from the off campuses. Mike suggested that we should hear from the off campuses first and then the advisory board members themselves should report. Presidents Council can provide written reports from their areas to be delivered with the agenda to the board prior to the meeting. This would be a more effective way to conduct the meetings. Presidents Council agreed that this would be a good way to improve the Advisory Board meetings. Presidents Council would like to see the Advisory Board be more action-oriented. Dr. Killpatrick will notify Chair Dave Roden of the change in the meetings. Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort Higher education in the Gulf States has been virtually wiped out. In an effort to help in the Katrina effort GBC is making the campus open to any student affected by Katrina. John Rice stated that GBC is partnering with United Way, the American Red Cross, and the Elko Broadcasting Company for a 12 hour broadcast marathon to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina this Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on our campus. Several local performers will play music sets, read poetry and tell stories throughout the day. Tammy Staley and Bailey Billington are working on putting GBCs name on a number of list serves that will lead Katrina students our way. Continuing their education is probably not their priority, but we can be set up if there are students who want to come. John spoke with the Chancellor of the Tennessee Higher Education system and they are the real clearinghouse for this endeavor. GBC is on their register for campuses accepting students from the Gulf States. Miscellaneous Carl Diekhans assessment on the Hawkes bundle system we just need to let all the students know that the bookstore will not buy these math books back. We can put a note on the books so the students know from the beginning that the books wont be bought back by the bookstore. Carl Diekhans will bring a camera policy to the next Presidents Council meeting for discussion. We are looking at a low profile design at the Foundation. John Rice met with Bret and Joe Royer on the DVD recruitment video to promote career and technical education programs. John is looking for more money so that we can promote our other programs on the DVD also. 1BD~, - .
