Nye County Update Dr. Killpatrick reported that he and Garry Heberer returned yesterday from a rural tour of Yomba, Gabbs, Duckwater, Round Mountain and Tonopah to meet with school officials. They covered eight hundred miles in two days. They also met with Midge Carver, who is a Nye County Commissioner, in Round Mountain. Mike McFarlane stated that the transition with Nye County is going as expected. There have been only minor problems which have been taken care of quickly. Margaret Puccinelli will be going to Pahrump in November. John Rice reported that he talked with Bob Swadell about the need for a vehicle in Pahrump. Perhaps he can get GBC a good deal at a local dealership. Pahrump is currently borrowing a truck from Elko which belongs to housing. Dr. Killpatrick reported that the Chancellor has scheduled a rural town hall meeting in Pahrump on September 25. Dr. Killpatrick stated he will be attending the meeting and requested John Rice attend as well. Miscellaneous Carl Diekhans reported that Lynn Mahlberg has requested additional space in the Community Center for Student Services. Carl will forward the request to the Facilities Committee. Carl Diekhans reported that the excessive spam everyone has been receiving is not related to GBC changing to the Tangent system. The reason for so much spam is that employees are still using their old email addresses. This is a serious issue that we must address. One choice is to ask all employees to give up their old email addresses and use only their new gwmail.gbcnv.edu address. Presidents Council said the issue needs to go to the Technology Committee for their review and recommendation. Carl Diekhans reported that Lisa Frazier has asked for $10,000 for some video streaming software (one-time only fee). Her department would pitch in $15,000 (from student fees.) The software would utilize UNIX. Our computer techs do not have the experience to support UNIX. Lisa Frazier said that she could be the support person. Video streaming slows the whole system. The new software does compression of video and would be used for WebCT classes. Presidents Council recommended running the request through the Distance Education Committee for their review and recommendation. Linda Uhlenkotts concern is that some of our students do not have DSL or high-powered computers. John Rice reported that we have hired Jinlong Li for the emergency hire for the webmaster. Jinlong has been working on updates. Walt Fisk has been assisting with web updates also. Mike McFarlane said that currently the webmaster reports to Garry Heberer. All requests for changes to the website will be submitted via a website change request. Garry will coordinate the change requests. Ongoing discussions will continue about how GBC uses the website and what we want out of our website in the future. Mike McFarlane reported that he and Bret Murphy attended at meeting with the UNR Fire Science Academy about a collaborative program. The meeting was very positive. We would combine hands-one courses that the FSA already offers with classes that we offer in order to offer an Emergency Response and Management certificate. The FSA has students throughout the United States and the world. The potential to offer this program via distance education is favorable. We could have classes online by next fall. Linda Uhlenkott reported that Cindy Hyslop is the Faculty Senate Secretary (Annie Ulrich is the recording secretary.) The Faculty Senate Committees were approved at the meeting on Friday. Don Zumalt and Joy Redfern are the faculty adjunct reps. Faculty Senate is in the talking phase of creating an academic honesty policy. The policy will address the steps to take when you suspect plagiarism. John Rice said that Western Nevada Community College has just incorporated a new plagiarism policy that could be of interest. WNCC also uses software that recognizes plagiarized material. Carl Diekhans reported that the modular has been delivered to Wendover. The modular is located on the high school campus. We will be going to Wendover next week to see what we need to get it hooked up to interactive video. We are still looking for more modulars.
