SGA election packages are out with ten senator spots in Elko, two in Winnemucca, one in Battle Mountain, and two in Ely. The Student Life department has worked hard this summer to put on the Jump Start program which was quite successful. They had five applications. Grant Update Jeannie Rosenthal reported that GBC has received the PACE Coalition State Incentive grant for the second year. The grant is for the Challenging College Alcohol Abuse project. We will conduct the survey in November. For the past year GBC has received Perkins leadership funding. It gives us a good partnership with the Nevada Department of Education. The Carl Perkins Incentive grant will help create new DVDs to educate people about the technical fields and the non tradition fields they can get into. The Nevada Arts Council grant will help fund the 2005/2006 Speakers and Events series including the 2005 Great Basin Festival. This grant requires a dollar for dollar cash match. If anyone has any ideas for authors to bring in and tie to the curriculum, please give Pat Warren a call as she is the chair of the planning committee. Currently, Jeannie is working on the Rural Health Out reach grant through HRSA. The proposal is to develop and implement a Human Services Certificate Program (and possibly an associate degree) that trains and educates individuals for paraprofessional jobs that support the delivery of a broad range of health-related services currently lacking in GBCs rural service area. These health-related services would occur in such diverse care settings as mental health agencies, elderly assistive agencies, family, child and youth service agencies, correctional agencies, and programs concerned with alcoholism, drug abuse and violence. There is a great need in our service area for training for these types of occupations. Presidents Council gave their approval to go ahead with the grant proposal. Faculty Senate Update Linda Uhlenkott reported that Faculty Senate met on August 26, 2005 for the first time this semester. The academic calendars for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 were approved. Also approved were TT109B Driver Education Course, Senate Committee memberships, and Lynnette Macfarlan as secretary of the Senate. There was some discussion about standardized assessment tests for GBC graduates. The issue of holding classes on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving was raised. Frank Daniels, program supervisor for the BAIPS, reported at the meeting that six new students are in that program. Their committee is revising the Administration in Humanities and Art degree. There are twelve students in the BSN program. Several of the BSN courses will be opened to students who might have an interest in the program. Academic Calendar Mike McFarlane presented the academic calendar for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 that Faculty Senate approved. Presidents Council approved the academic calendars. Miscellaneous Mike McFarlane reported that students can start enrolling in the Driver Education course. We are hoping for 25 FTE, but there is a potential for 60 FTE. Lisa Frazier has put a lot of time developing the online class and Pat Warren worked to make this happen. GBC met with the high school counselors and spent a great deal of time talking about GBCs programs and the new Driver Education program. Lynn Mahlberg announced that Jeannie Long has been hired as the Switchboard Operator located at the Welcome Desk in Berg Hall. Jeannie has been a student at GBC, student worker in various areas and was most recently working in Media Services. Her supervisor will be Yvonne Sutherland.
