Nye County Update Paul Killpatrick reported that Al Daniels, Director of the Pahrump Valley Center, was here on Monday for the Welcome Back activities. Next week Paul and Garry Heberer will be traveling to Nye County to visit with school administrators in Yomba, Gabbs, Tonopah, Round Mountain and Duckwater. Lora McCarty will be at the Pahrump Valley Center all next week in case the computer systems go down. Phil Smith is in Pahrump this week for counseling. SGA Update Julie Smith introduced student leaders who participated in two leadership conferences in New York City and New Jersey this past summer. Stacie Potter and Ger Heise will be continuing their leadership training during the next year. Stacie and Carrie Rowley reported on the conferences and that SGA will be implemented a number of the strategies that they learned. SGA wants to embrace and encourage student involvement and will focus on opportunities. Julie Smith announced that Carrie Rowley has been nominated as a national student leader by the National Student Leadership Association. If elected, she will be one of twenty-two students in the nation to get the award. Stacie Potter reported that the leadership seminars presented in New Jersey focused on leadership, conflict resolution, working as a team, learning what you are good at and what others are good at. SGA would like to present the information they learned to all groups on campus. Carrie Rowley reported that the New York seminars were on networking, new ideas, maximizing your budget and provided opportunities for improvement and promotion. Dana Gallegos presented the information at the SGA leadership retreat. SGA will have a September retreat for newly elected officers after the elections in September. The retreat is planned for September 23 and 24 at the Winnemucca campus. The focus this year is more student involvement at all of the campuses. Paul said he appreciates the SGAs enthusiasm this year. He would like SGA to present workshops to the whole campus. Lynn agreed and said their enthusiasm is contagious. Classified Council Update Annie Ulrich wanted to thank PC for providing food for the family barbeque on July 30. There were one hundred adults and forty children attending. There were many activities thanks to Norm Cavanaugh. The meat that wasnt cooked was given to B&G for their own barbeque. Classified Council recommends that in the future, everyone be given day off for the family barbeque. It gives everyone the opportunity to attend. Classified Council donated playground equipment to Student Housing. Some of the activities planned for this year include the Chili Cook-off, a Thanksgiving community project, the Christmas tree project, employee picnic, and classified holiday celebration. The Relay for Life GBC team raised $3,208.92. The team had a $500 donation from SGA and $250 donation from Classified Council. Annie reported that they are looking at a more unified Classified Council for 2006-2007. Betty Richardson, co-chair, is developing ad hoc committee with a rep from each campus to have a program of interest, so they can show the appeal of rural living. They want to emphasis respect for each other and the institution. Grant Update Jeannie Rosenthal reported on grants. There have been no huge developments. GBC is eligible for $7,000 of Perkins money for the career and technical area. Bret Murphy would like to use the money to bring in a specialist to address learning disabilities in the CTE programs and how best to deal with that issue. There is a total of $1,391,000 in grant money. Mike McFarlane said that he learned in his meetings in Washington, D.C. that there may be money somewhere in the HRSA to bring a consultant from the University of Georgia to Elko to help ensure we get the money. He is working on budget revisions now. GBC is also looking at a grant from National Endowment for Humanities. Paul would like to research any grants opportunities to fund student activities. Mardell Wilkins reported that GBC has received a $15,000 grant from the BLM to develop a website for sustainable development in mining communities. She will be in charge of the project. Academic Calendar Mike McFarlane presented the proposed academic calendar for 2009-2010. The Chancellors office needs the approved calendar by September 15. Linda will put it on the Faculty Senate Agenda for the meeting on September 15. Miscellaneous Carl and Paul attended a Public Works meeting in Carson City on Tuesday where the systems capital improvement budget was presented. Carl said that the state has a 600 million dollar bonding capacity, but that the prisons are asking for 500 million of that. We probably will not get more than $100 million for higher education. We need to start talking to our legislators. Carl and Paul met afterwards at Western Nevada Community College with all of the presidents to discuss the budget further. GBC will not be allowed to count Pahrumps enrollment, so we still need 150 more FTE for our hold harmless status. The budgets are evaluated and readjusted on March 15. Lynn Mahlberg reported that this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. is the Meet and Greet barbeque. She also reported that any institution who accepts federal funds has to put on a Constitution Day. GBC will be celebrating Constitution Day on September 19. There is a possibility that we will have Justice James Hardesty on campus for this event. Carrie Rowley said that the Student Government Association will do a memorial for the 5th anniversary of September 11. They will also be thinking about a commencement speaker. Carl Diekhans stated that he is serving on the ERP Integrative System committee. The committee meets every week. He would like to meet with Student Services and Academic Affairs to get their input. Lynn said she would like to see the students input as well. The integrative computer system would be funded through fees (1/3), legislature (1/3), and 1/3 through the institutions. Carl said the project is estimated around $100 million. Carl Diekhans reported that Karen Dannehl would like to bring to the campus a national display on the Wind Talkers of World War II on October 8, 2006 January 09, 2007. The display would cost $2,500 plus shipping. We would have to use non-state money. They need 100 linear feet for the display. She also would like to purchase display cases for rotating state displays. Several of them would cost $20,000. Carl told Karen to discuss it with Mike McFarlane. Carl Diekhans said the shortage of office space has generated a great deal of complaints. We are doing the best that we can right now. Mike did speak with Lynn Owens. She will be using her office during her sabbatical John Rice reported that he is planning on doing an emergency hire for the webmaster position. Mike says we need to have a philosophical discussion about the purpose of the GBC website. John Rice presented numbers on new student enrollments. As stated in the last PC meeting, our new student enrollments are no more than the trend. We are not increasing new student enrollment in a spectacular way. We were disappointed the last publication of Career Focus. We are considering discontinuing Career Focus. We can keep large mailings up and have an early schedule that focuses on the academic courses and a more expanded one that comes out later. Mike McFarlane said that GTA 119 has been used for online testing. He is afraid that the testing will be bumped for classes and proposes that this does not happen. Short-term classes could be put in the library computer room. Mike McFarlane said that teaching assistants are paid out of LOA funds, not student worker funds. There is a need for someone like a teaching assistant to oversee the GBC art. We need to allocate more TA money for this purpose. We need to have future discussions about this need. Linda Uhlenkott said that a short survey should be conducted on what faculty think they need and what is important regarding the ERP system. Linda reported that Faculty Senate Chairs raved about Elko and the GBC campus when they were here last week. David Ellefsen has agreed to be the Phi Theta Kappa advisor for the 2006-2007 academic year.
