FTE The latest FTE report states we are at 1173 FT compared with 1208 at this time last year. We are 3% down from last year and 8% down from our goal. Elko is short by 95 FTE. Winnemucca is now short by 25 FTE. Internet is up 50 FTE. Mike McFarlane brought for an idea put forth by Sarah Negrete to increase FTE. She suggested that the college have people available at Southside Elementary to talk to parents who want to take classes. There are people over there interested in computer classes or ESL but are too intimidated to come to the campus. Maybe we could get Irma Reyes involved and target that Hispanic population which is concentrated over on the south side of town. Presidents Council agreed that this is a good idea and should start immediately. Mike McFarlane and Lynn Mahlberg will meet with Sarah to further brainstorm this idea. We should also place advertisements in Spanish. Mike McFarlane is still working on getting the Underground Miner Training Academy running. The supervisory training for the mines is slow. The drivers education training will start September 19 and should give us a significant boost in FTE. Mike said that the faculty is doing the best that they can with the resources available. We are continuing to stress the development of online classes and hybrid classes so that students have choices other than the traditional time slots for certain classes. Faculty Senates Distance Education Committee needs to be involved in all of these discussions and will be included. Danny Gonzales is compiling responses from the online development workshop and the Welcome Back. John Rice provided comments from Dorothy Moores orientation class. The new students stated that their main concerns were: 1) they would be unable to finish, 2) would not be able to afford it, and 3) math. Its suggested that these students be contacted within the first three weeks after the semester starts to lead the students to success. Of course, faculty needs to be involved with making this contact, but sometimes we see a better success rate when students are contacted by fellow students. We must not depend on SGA officers for our retention. Contacting the students three weeks into the semester will have to go to the department chairs for discussion. Lisa Heise suggested that the undeclared students be filtered to one area for advisement as a way to reach these students. Good advising and nurturing will have positive effects on long term retention. The unusually good economic situation reflects in our low FTE. Danny Gonzales said that with the economy doing so well, we absolutely need to increase our online offerings and contract training. Other institutions in Nevada are offering more online classes than we are and they are seeing an increase in FTE. Our faculty are developing the online courses as quickly as they can, but maybe we need to hire another online development specialist. We need to get the word out to students that there are computers available in the computer labs for them to use for their internet classes. Secretarial Support for Faculty Senate Committees Mike McFarlane reported that Annie Ulrich will be the administrative support for Faculty Senate. He reported that the faculty senate committees are requesting secretarial support. Except for the bachelor programs, committees are generally not allotted secretarial support. Mike McFarlane and Linda Uhlenkott will meet to discuss this further. Academic Calendar Mike McFarlane had a draft of the Academic Calendar for 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. We need verification with the school districts on their spring breaks. Linda will put the Academic Calendar on the Faculty Senate Agenda for a vote. It will then be brought back to Presidents Council for final approval. 5. Student Services Loans Student Services is proposing to increase the number of credits students are allowed to take for financial assistance. They would like to increase the maximum number of credits from 38 to 57 for the certificate programs, from 75 to 90 for the associates programs and from 150 to 180 for the baccalaureate programs. This increase is in line with what other institutions in NSHE are doing. Presidents Council approved the recommendation. Miscellaneous The Welcome Back was well attended and we are getting some very positive feedback from the Progressive lunch. Lisa Heise reported that the billings for some scholarships have been shifted over to the Foundation. The Foundation will follow up early this fall on the contacts and leads developed during the barbeque for the Electrical/Technology building. Lynn Mahlberg announced that the new Student Financial Services & Veterans Affairs Director will be Scott Nielsen. Student Services will be working with the Controllers office so that there can be a smooth transition. There was a question as to why GBC Adjunct faculty were taken off the GBC-All list serve. The adjuncts are taken off the GBC-All list at the end of June and will be added back when the list is updated. The best way to get communications to adjunct is to email Suzy Sanders to forward to whomever she thinks is important. The GBC-adjuncts will be added back to GBC-all soon. Danny Gonzales stated that we are trying to get the adjuncts to use the website for communications.
