FTE No discussion. Student Life Update Robbi Phillips and Julie Smith were present to give a student life update. Ms. Phillips stated that a great deal has been accomplished this summer. She thanked Lynn Mahlberg for letting them work during the summer so that they could meet their goals. Ms. Phillips reported that SGA has hired Jennifer Nachiondo to take care of the treasury and to organize everything in case of audit. Letters have been sent to 300 businesses to ask about offering student discounts for GBC student ID holders. Businesses who offer the discount will put a sign in their business window that has a GBC logo and statement that the business offers the discount. Ms. Phillips met with Jan Kempster to talk about student orientation and having a discussion on student life and clubs as part of the orientation. Each student in the orientation class will receive a free meal card with one free meal to get students over to that area. The new Welcoming Center is a combination of SGA ambassadors and the Student Life department and the goal is to have the center manned at all times. On August 12, SGA is conducting the Jump Start Program for a diverse group of students who have shown their leadership skills in other areas and teach them how to get involved in leadership opportunities on campus. The Bighorn Activities Center or Bac room as they refer to it now will be partitioned to make three offices so that the clubs have work spaces and file cabinets. The third week in September will be elections. Ms. Phillips and Julie Smith will be meeting with system attorney Mark Ghan to review the SGA constitution. SGA will have a calendar out before school starts. The third Thursday of every month will be a large event. SGA is trying to develop some sort of consistency, so that if people are expecting or anticipating an event, they are more likely to attend. SGA is creating a Wall of Honor that will honor people in our area that are serving in the military. Ms. Phillips will be on KRJC radio station with John Hunt every other week in the fall to talk about student activities. Working on GBCs image and getting our name out there. SGA would like to replace the sign outside with a scrolling marquee and is in the process of getting a quote from a Young Sign. Paying for College Envelopes and Stationary Deferred to next week. GBC Faculty Jazz Ensemble Sonny Hand presented his proposal for at ɫ Faculty Jazz band. Mr. Hand would like to organize the GBC jazz band to bring more exposure to GBC, possibly to increase FTE, and provide an outlet for faculty, staff, and local performers who have an interest in quality jazz ensemble performance. The jazz band should not be a financial burden to the college. They would need a rehearsal room. We would have to ensure that the rehearsals would not interfere with other classes or meetings going on at the same time. Getting local musicians such as Walt Lovell and Gene Russell involved would bring more high school aged people to campus (recruitment). Presidents Council was supportive of the proposal and suggested the name be changed to the GBC Jazz Ensemble to make it more inclusive. Ms. Phillips offered the use of the Bighorn Activities room. Credit could be offered for participating in the ensemble. April is National Jazz Appreciation month, and there may be an opportunity to host a jazz festival on campus. John Rice will serve as the contact person for this potential program. Email Account Name Change Jeff Cox discussed the possible email account name change. They dont really care if we change the account names, but this would be the time to do as his department is redoing the servers. They would want to keep the Novell and GroupWise names the same. Presidents Council discussed the options and agreed to the following changes: FirstNameLastInitial, then a number starting with 2 for any duplicates. Fall Schedule Garry Heberer brought up concerns about the timeline for getting the schedules in for fall and spring. It seems like a tight schedule using September 18 as the deadline for fall, and the Department Chairs were not aware this change was going to be made. The week faculty returns is very busy. In the future, a good share of the schedule should be done by the time they leave in spring. Mike McFarlane is pushing for a four year plan to line out courses for the next four years. Theres a core there that you know that you will have, and then add as necessary. Dr. Heberer requested moving the due date to September 25. SIS Operations doesnt need quite as much time to review. Presidents Council believes we should at least make an effort to make the original due dates work. Eventually this will be how it has to be. Faculty is back on August 18 and that gives them a month to prepare. 2005 Fall In-Service/Professional Development Danny Gonzales provided an update to the in-service activities. Jeff Cox will have sessions on GroupWise file management and archiving email. Jeff Cox will also be talking to faculty senate about the quarantine report. The focus for in-service activities will be enhancing web based teaching and learning. The in-service calendar will be finalized this week. The Progressive Lunch details are being worked out. Miscellaneous Dial up to the GBC webpage is now 6 seconds after some changes were implemented. Danny Gonzales inquired about the GBC honorary baccalaureate or associate degree recipients and if we are still doing that. It would be a great idea to have a spot on campus for recognition of all the honorary degree recipients. The campus needs to create a campus wide social calendar to post in various places and on the web. We could also provide it to the Chamber of Commerce. Julie Smith also expressed the need for a flexi-glass kiosk where everyone could go to check out what is happening on campus. The scrolling marquee would help. Mark Ghan, system attorney, will be here this week. If you have any legal issues to discuss with him, make an appointment with Mardell Wilkins. Human Resources will be sending out note to employees reminding them of their grant in aid benefit and encourage them to use it. Erik Seastedt reported that there has been a big cut in student employee money because of the decrease in rap money. Allocations for student employment money should be out this week. Other options are work study. Tawny Crum has sent out letters to eligible students. Lisa Heise brought photos to send to donors to show where their name appears on the property. It costs us so little to do this and brings great appreciation to the donor. Next Tuesday at noon, the Foundation is hosting a barbeque for various mining companies and suppliers in hopes of coming up with ideas to fund the $500,000 in in-kind donations that are needed for the Electrical/Technology Building. The Foundation hopes to come up with a wish list of the equipment that is needed and to get this information to the mines and suppliers now, so that when something is decommissioned, theyll know that they can donate that needed piece of equipment. The key is to get this in front of them now. John Rice stated that each web page will have a consistent brand. There are a couple of web pages that will have to be changed. He would like the same header on each page to be consistent. Presidents Council agrees that all homepages need to have the same brand across the top. Paul Killpatrick is hosting the Mountain States Association of Community Colleges Summer meeting on the GBC campus on August 4-6, 2005. Paul Killpatrick informed PC that today at 2:00 p.m. he and John Rice are meeting with a reporter from the New York Times to talk about the effect of gold mining on rural communities. We will give them a balanced perspective on what could have been a one-sided article.
