FTE Dr. Killpatrick stated that there are plenty of issues to deal with concerning FTE. GBC needs to establish a date on when the schedule is going to be ready. He would like to inform faculty that they must submit their schedules by March 1, 2005 with the final fall schedule being distributed in April. For the spring 2006 schedule, faculty must submit their schedules by September 18 with the final spring schedule being distributed in October. FTE will be a standing agenda item for Presidents Council, thus allowing an avenue to bring forth ideas to improve our FTE. GBC cannot be held harmless two times in a row, so we must do what we can to increase our FTE. GBC encourages and adjuncts and classified employees to take as many classes as they can with their grant-in aid. Dr. Uhlenkott suggested meeting with the Elko County School District and Humboldt County School District to discuss offering continuing education classes. GBC needs to work with the school districts to establish dual enrollment credits besides English and History. GBC is on the agenda for the high school counselors meeting in August. Accreditation Update Danny Gonzales distributed copies of some correspondence that GBC has received in the past few weeks from Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. The Commission approved GBCs proposal for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing as a no change under Policy A-2, Substantive Change. The Bachelor of Arts in Integrated and Professional Studies Arts & Humanities was a no change also as the Commission determined the resources identified in the prospectus appear adequate to support the degree. There are three different changes that Northwest uses: a no change, a minor change, and a major change. The process of submitting a proposal to Northwest has been streamlined. GBC will now submit the same proposal that is submitted to the Board of Regents for their approval. Northwest will then determine what type of change the proposal is and will request additional information from GBC if needed. GBC has a positive track record with Northwest as all our reviews have been positive. GBC has received an outline of what is expected in our regular interim report for reaffirmation of accreditation due in 2008. 2005 Fall In-Service/Professional Development Dr. Gonzales has been working with faculty/staff at Indiana University for them to come to GBC on August 18 to present a workshop on web-based learning and online course development. There will be two consultants that we will pay $1,500 each to conduct the workshop. Lisa Frazier will present two workshops on WebCT which will complement the workshop. We need to emphasize these workshops to adjuncts and other faculty members that this is going to be a great workshop to go to. Dr. McFarlane and Dr. Uhlenkott will prepare a joint letter encouraging participation. An exit interview has been scheduled for August 20 for recommendations and wrap up. PC recommended that the GBC orientations be included in the calendar. Hawkes Learning Systems Demos Math people will be here on August 24 to provide training to the math faculty. Dr. Uhlenkott suggested having a progressive lunch to allow faculty to see all of the GBC buildings in town. We would have to work out the logistics with Xavier. Dr. Uhlenkott will talk with faculty to see if there is interest. We would have to get transportation to and from the different sites. Dr. Gonzales stated GBC is only going to have approximately $15,000 for regular professional development travel instead of the $25,000 that we thought we would have. The shortage is because last year we had staff taking doctorate and master degree courses that submitted their invoices in June. We need to receive requests at the very beginning of the year. Email Account Name Change Presidents Council is not ready to make a decision about changing the name for the Groupwise email accounts. From facultys point of view, one more change wont be appreciated. Jeff Cox will be invited to attend next weeks Presidents Council meeting to address the issue. Miscellaneous Dial up access discussion some suggestions to make dial up to the GBC webpage faster: remove the scrolling news; remove the rotating photos and have a single photo. Ask Erik Smith (the Barrick intern) to see if he knows Flash Technology. Find out what it costs to hire someone who knows Flash technology and/or get training for Sean Thompson. Simplify cover even further. Getting the website to load faster is the problem. The subsequent pages are mostly text, so once loaded they should not cause a slow down. GBC will be having our commencement on May 19 at the convention center. Dr. Killpatrick will make sure that we have a standing reservation with them from here on out. Jeannie Rosenthal reported that we received $8,000 from the Nevada Humanities Committee to pitch the speaker and events series, and we folded it into the Great Basin Festival. Ms. Rosenthal proposed bringing in Khaled Hosseini to open dialog about the Middle East and the Muslim faith. Hosseini is the author of the critically acclaimed first novel Kite Runner. She would try to coordinate Hosseinis visit with another commitment that he has in Nevada to possibly get a better deal. We could propose this to faculty early enough so that they could incorporate it into their curriculum. It is a $10,000 to $12,000 commitment to bring Hosseini here, and SGA is interested in helping to support a big name. Academic Affairs may be able to help with the expense as well. We have $10,000 covered. Presidents Council agreed that Ms. Rosenthal proceed to gather more information as to costs. Dr. Uhlenkott will check into maybe incorporating this into a 400 level English course. Great Basin Festival will be on September 19-23, 2005 and will coincide with the balloon festival. The committee is considering a Reggae band. The Balloon glow will occur in Chilton Circle by the GBC logo. The theme of the festival is water and how it has transformed the west and the Great Basin. For the kickoff, the committee is looking at having a Native American elder talk about the spirituality of water, rain dances, and snow dances and we will record it as part of the archive. They will be showing Robert Redfords film The Milagro Beanfield War and Cadillac Desert. We could also have a photo competition. The committee is still working out many of the details. Carl Diekhans reported that GBC needs to come up with approximately $30,000 for our portion of the legal counsel for FY 06. For FY 05, GBC overspent by $80,000 which had to be covered by our reserve. The new budget information should be distributed soon. Erik Seastedt stated that there are some new rules about confidentiality on applicants. Search committees will now have to sign a confidentiality form in order to serve on a hiring committee. Erik Seastedt reported that GBC will allow people to work extra time to cover the four days between Christmas and New Years, as we did last year. Now is the time to start working extra hours to use as comp time. Mike McFarlane stated that the Underground Miner Training Academy is garnishing genuine enthusiasm and we will continue to push as rapidly as possible. Dr. Killpatrick stated that GBC will sponsor the balloon festival again this year. We will be giving away three tickets (one each for classified, students, and faculty). Dr. Killpatrick stated that Tony Curtis people dont book any further than 6 months out, so if Tony Curtis isnt available to be our commencement speaker then we may be able to get Debbie Reynolds. John Rice said that the fall schedules should be in mailboxes today and that Career Focus will be delivered next week.
