Accreditation Update Danny Gonzales reported that the overall accreditation visit went smoothly. Everyone pitched in to pull the report together and to meet with evaluators. We should be receiving the draft report on Thursday for review. Dr. Mike McFarlane reported that regarding the evaluators question of whats good and whats bad about GBC, from the students point of view the good thing is the availability of classes. From the facultys point of view, whats bad about GBC is that they feel overloaded. Energy Efficiency Grant Mr. Bret Murphy reported that Mr. Stan Popeck had originally applied for the Energy Efficiency grant about a year ago. The grant will fund $150,000 for equipment for interactive rooms at CCSN, TMCC, WNCC and GBC for energy efficiency program core classes. Mr. Murphy recently attended a meeting and another meeting will be held on May 18 to work out the details. The grant is for the delivery of the core curriculum. The last 15 credits will be delivered by GBC with GBC offering the degree. The program could start this fall. GBCs specialty will be electrical, but will deliver instrumentation and industrial plant management. TMCC has electrical; CCSN has electrical; WNCC has electrical. GBC will be the first college to offer the program as a degree. The program is modeled after the program at North Hampton Community College. The worst case scenario would be that we offer only the five core classes, but we dont want to just do that. Miscellaneous Lisa Heise provided paperwork for the Community College of Excellence Award from Met Life for $30,000. Dr. Killpatrick was interested in pursuing. Lynn Mahlberg stated that AB153 has died; however another bill was introduced with language about the eligibility for millennium scholars. Once again, we will need to watch this bill. Bret Murphy reported that anyone on Presidents Council is invited to go on the mine tour of Barricks Meikle underground mine on May 16. GBCs new attorney, Mark Ghan, was here on April 27 and 28 to meet with Presidents Council and other groups. The meetings went well. Mike McFarlane reported that the IDEA Literary Magazine will be out next week. IDEA does not have many graphic art entries, but next year we will make a broader, earlier appeal for the theme. There is a website called words without borders that has writings from around the world that are translated into English. The website could be used to supplement the INT curriculum. Its a good source for topics of fiction and non-fiction from around the world. Danny Gonzales reported a presentation on fetal alcohol spectrum will be conducted by Dr. Susan Doctor on May 26 in the HSCI building. Obviously, the spectrum is something that you want to identify early so that proper assistance can be had. Carl Diekhans and Paul Killpatrick attended the budget hearing in Carson City on May 5, 2005. It was a partial budget closing. (.354 5 6 J M [ \ n v ' ) - < v = > ?
