Accreditation Update Danny Gonzales distributed copies of the itinerary for the evaluators Dr. Smart and Dr. Abbott. Dr. Gonzales will follow up with everyone to let them know what the time and locations will be to meet with the evaluators. He is currently working on verifying the contents of the report. Exit interview is scheduled from 4:30 to 5:30 on April 27. We will know at that point what the evaluators findings will be. SGA Update Ms. Robbi Phillips reported for the Student Government Association. The SGA elections are being held this week. All candidates are running unopposed with no one running for vice president. Ms. Phillips reported that she has four high school seniors who have volunteered to attend a Student Government workshop this summer to learn how to be a senator. The workshop will benefit SGA because it creates a board that is constantly progressing and everyone has the opportunity to move up. Ms. Phillips reported that there are no events planned for the rest of fall; with all the pinning ceremonies and luncheons that they are involved in, there is not enough time to plan anything else. Classified Council Update Ms. Chris Marshall reported for Classified Council. She reported that the Classified Council had a vote on the Excellence Award for the Community College Conference. Cynthia Vaughn-Giles and Kevin Hummel received their Excellence Award at the Community College Conference at WNCC. Two more awards will be awarded at the Classified Council picnic on June 4. The picnic will be for classified staff and their families at the city park. Elections for new Classified Council officers are ongoing. Voting closes on May 4. Grant Update Ms. Jeannie Rosenthal provided a grant update. Submitted a grant proposal to the Nevada Humanities committee for the speaker and events series. Submitted a grant proposal to the Nevada Arts Council for the Great Basin Festival and the Speakers and Events Series. Funding from the Nevada Humanities for the Speakers and Events series is designed to provide the impetus to open up dialog on our campuses about difficult issues such as race, the Middle East, and divergent ways of thinking and human expression. The goal is to help interested faculty to include connections to the speakers and events in their courses over the next year. A committee has been established to be the hub for ideas for speakers and events and to work with faculty. The concept has been presented to Faculty Senate and at Department Chair meetings and has been received with enthusiasm. We will be partnering with the Western Folklife Center during the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in January 2006. They are bringing speakers to discuss South American Vaqueros/Vaquero poetry and will have their speakers present for GBC students (in classrooms and workshops.) These speakers will be included in our Speakers and Events series. The Ford Foundation is requesting preliminary proposals for their Difficult Dialogues Initiative; which is what we are trying to accomplish with our Speakers and Events series. The grant is up to $100,000 over two years to provide faculty development, speakers fees, etc. in relation to Difficult Dialogues. Presidents Council was in favor that Ms. Rosenthal should proceed with the proposal. Presidents Council was in agreement that Ms. Rosenthal prepare proposals for the following grants: the Perkins Basic, Perkins Tech Prep, Perkins Correctional, Ford Foundation, and ECE Continuation of the Firefly program. We have to be careful of what grant opportunities we go for. For instance, if we want to pick up the COW bus, it would come out of the $105,000 for the firefly program. Faculty Senate Update Ms. Kathy Schwandt provided a Faculty Senate update. Faculty Senate would like to discuss the athletics programs with Dr. Killpatrick, Carl Diekhans and Dan Jones. Senate unanimously approved the final exam schedule for spring 2006. The Academic Standards Committee emphasized the importance of students going through the proper process in the case of a grade appeal as stated in the catalog. Senate did not approve the INT waiver. They did approve transferring the responsibility for organizing INT 100 to the Director of the Academic Success Center. In a special e-mail vote on April 6, faculty voted to approve the latest version of the Faculty Workload Policy. It was brought to Presidents Council today for review and approval. Presidents Council approved the Faculty Workload Policy. Mr. Erik Seastedt will ensure that the document is sent to media services for inclusion into the GBC Policy and Procedure Manual. Senate discussed responsibilities of the ad hoc Administrative Salary Committee, including GBCs Position Assessment Process (a point system), merit pay for non-teaching faculty, and administrative evaluations. System attorneys will be on campus this week and should talk to the Administrative Salary Committee about these issues. Summer Hours Dr. Killpatrick announced that Summer Hours begin May 23, 2005 August 1, 2005. The hours will be from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a half an hour for lunch. Individuals who must work their regular 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. because of extenuating circumstances must get the approval of their supervisor. Faculty Workload Policy Approval As mentioned above, the new Faculty Workload Policy was approved by email vote by Faculty Senate. Presidents Council approved the new Faculty Workload Policy. Mr. Seastedt will make sure the policy gets into the GBC Policy and Procedure Guide. Administrative Faculty Evaluation Form Discussion item. The form which deals with administrative faculty has not gone to Senate for approval. Dr. McFarlane reported that Marilee Kuhl stated the assessment committee has no comment on the procedure. There is currently no administrative evaluation process that has been approved by faculty senate. The policy in place was approved by administration. It would be good business to run it by the administrative evaluation committee for their approval because there are administrative faculty that are part of faculty senate. Ms. Schwandt will take to Ms. Kuhl for review by the Administrative Evaluation Committee. General Brochure Mr. John Rice requested approval of the General Brochure. General Education curriculum has been emphasized in the main brochure because it drives everything on campus. Then there will be single page inserts for specific program information and transfer information. The General Brochure will be mailed to people who inquire and given out at career fairs. The Foundation will be incorporating the brochure into their materials. Miscellaneous Dr. Killpatrick welcomed Ms. Lisa Heise to Presidents Council. Ms. Heise is the Interim Director of the Foundation. Mr. Diekhans has been working diligently on options to the hold harmless request. He presented some other options to Presidents Council. If FTE was at 2.2% and the budget was funded at 85.87%, GBC would have a shortage of $365,929 for FY06 and $329,449 for FY07. The best case scenario would be if the FTE was at 5.2% and the budget was funded at 85.87%, GBC would have a shortage of $190,116 for FY06 and no shortage for FY07. The budget closes on May 5, 2005. Mr. Diekhans encourages instructors to get their book orders in to qualify for the drawings and so that students can get maximum refunds for their used books. Dr. Gonzales reported that through negotiation, GBC will be receiving Eric Smith back as an intern from Barrick. Usually Barrick sponsors three interns, but they are short handed this year. Dr. McFarlane reported that Newmont is sponsoring 48 MTC scholarships and now we need to get the students. That may mean recruiting from Fernley or Fallon. The Department of Education will be visiting the end of next week to review the Secondary Education Program. Chancellors Search Committee will be interviewing two people for the Chancellors position: current Interim Chancellor, Jim Rogers and Robert King from New York. Interviews will be conducted this Thursday in Las Vegas. Mr. Seastedt reported excellent changes to our benefits. Open enrollments will be the entire month of May. Open enrollment meetings have been scheduled for May 17, 18, and 19.
