Pahrump Discussion Lynn Mahlberg reported that invitations were sent to current students in Nye County inviting them to tow Open Houses scheduled for April 10 and April 11. Student and Employee Success- Lynn Mahlberg invited Dr. Dorothy Moore and Lora McCarty to Presidents Council to talk about the programs that they have been working on. Dorothy Moore has been doing research on retention, and Lora McCarty has been doing research on creating an employee recognition program. Henry Villanueva, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs (Student Retention & Graduation) was here yesterday to discuss the system wide goals as they pertain to retention. Dr. Moore provided a copy of her research project to Presidents Council. She reported that the manuscript is still a work in progress and should not be distributed beyond Presidents Council. She has been researching student success at other institutions since September and has prepared a manuscript called Eye on the Prize that addresses what GBC can do to increase student successes and retention. Two sessions have been scheduled on April 7 and May 10 for Dorothy to present her report to faculty and support personnel. Lynn Mahlberg said that students achieve and are successful even without the degree or certificate. Lynn highly recommended to the Assistant to the Chancellor, Henry Villanueva to get this into the August Board of Regents meeting. John Rice says this is the right time for this because it ties in with shared governance and the mission statement. All employees need to have an understanding of the student population. Lora McCarty has worked with employee recognition programs in the past. The Student Employee Success committee has been discussing a GBC employee recognition program called CLASS: Connections, Loyalty, Service, and Satisfaction. They are looking for ideas for the program, but the focus is the employee interaction with the student. The idea would be to provide immediate and tangible feedback to the employee which would lead into the formal recognition that we have each year. In discussion with Paul, we would like to be able to kick the program off in the fall. Career Fair Lynn Mahlberg announced that this years Career Day will be held on April 12, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. in the GBC Fitness Center. Please encourage students to go over and check it out. Pat Collins has been heading this up. Classified Staff Bulletin Board Carl Diekhans reported he received a request from SNEA to place two bulletin boards on campus for classified announcements. Presidents Council approved that SNEA could put up two of their own bulletin boards, one in the break room in McMullen Hall and one in Berg Hall. Substantive Change Danny Gonzales and Mike McFarlane had a conference call with Ron Baker of Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Ron informed them that acquiring Pahrump would not be considered a major substantive change. Under NWCCU, Pahrump would be considered a satellite center, but under GBC definition it is a branch campus. This is good news as it gives us a little time to do the substantive change, and it does not warrant a site visit. The substantive change must have something stating what we will do if the state legislature does not fund the full amount we are requesting next year. Miscellaneous John Rice reported that mining executives will be visiting the campus on June 8 during the Mining Expo. This will be a good opportunity to talk about new programs and Electrical Technology building. The Red Lion will shuttle them from the Elko Convention Center to the college and back. The visit will be at 3:00 p.m. Paul said that he would like to see a college representative on the Mining Expo committee. Linda Uhlenkott reported that the Shared Governance Committee has discussed the mission statement for the college. John Rice says it is a good time to focus on this during the in-service. Linda Uhlenkott reported that the pilot credit INT classes for fall have been scheduled and books ordered. There are 10 sections which are each 5 weeks long. Faculty are emailing questioning if this is in the best interest of the students. Lynn Mahlberg stated the Vice President Henry Villanueva has a great deal of experience in this area and really supports it. Linda Uhlenkott reviewed the schedule for the Chancellors visit on April 14, 2006. Carl Diekhans said that professional non-teaching staff evaluations are due soon. Everyone should start going over goals. They are due on May 1, 2006. Carl Diekhans reported that he has put out a notice that spending has been frozen from all state accounts as of Monday. Any necessary purchase must now go through the appropriate vice president or the President. We must save as much money as we can to cover the increase in utilities and for part time salaries.
