Annual Plan Updates John Rice provided an update on the Communications, Marketing, and Public Relations action plan. Most of the goals of the Strategic Plan are being addressed in the general brochure. Production is underway for Career Focus magazine which will be delivered August 1, 2005 in lieu of the schedule. Mr. Rice has been working with TMCC to develop a partnership for creating a database warehouse that will talk to SIS. Mr. Rice now sits on the Native American and Hispanic Advisory Boards. There has been no action on the international programs. Dr. Gonzales stated that there is a program that offers the opportunity for interested parties to go to China for the summer the teach English as a second language. All publications are in the process of being updated. The General Brochure will be ready in June and Career Focus will be delivered in August. The policy and procedure guide for College Relations has been updated. He is working with the Recruitment and Retention Committee with marketing. Also, Mr. Rice is working with Jan King on ways to promote development of marketable programs. They are identifying transfer program needs. Ms. Lynn Mahlberg updated the Student Services action plan. Student Services has been working on the recommendations of the Paskill Stapleton & Lord report. Student Services is reorganizing their office space to provide and an admissions area, advising area, and career center area. John Rice and Sean Thompson are collaborating to create an interactive web site for admissions. The recruitment process is being enhanced by the development of Transition Tuesdays and Senior Outreach programs. Student Services continues to participate and develop enhancement programs such as Upward Bound to assist 9-12 grade students in preparing for college, particularly through summer programs. The departments have been very receptive to the newly created Recruitment and Retention committee. In March the Housing Activities Board Involve Tenants and Teamwork (H.A.B.I.T.A.T.) was created for housing student activities. The GBC Health Resource Web Site is up. A series of workshops on health related topics were organized for students in January and February. The alumni group has its first fundraising activity in the form of a 5-K Run called March Meltdown on March 19. Dr. McFarlane updated the Academic Affairs action plan. A policy has been established to review outcomes and assessments of courses within the general education program on a five-year rotating basis. For the long-range plan for distance education, $14,500 from NALS and additional money from IEE grant will equip two rooms at TMCC, and one each at WNCC and CCSN, for IAV. Training of new faculty is ongoing and we continue to recruit quality staff. GBC is meeting regularly with the mines to implement new programs to meet their needs. We are also in the process of developing internships for the bachelor programs. Dr. Ferry would like electronic versions of each plan as they are updated. Athletics Update Dan Jones and Scott Nielsen reported on the SWAC athletic conference basketball tournament that they attended this past weekend. This is the conference that GBC would belong to if we meet the qualifications. The SWAC conference has five sports: soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, and baseball. The junior colleges are recruiting quality athletes from out of northern Nevada. Dan and Scott feel that the community will support athletics by showing up to the games and that GBC could be competitive in this conference; the bigger problem is funding the startup. You would need $120,000 to $150,000 to start a program and approximately $100,000 per year to support it. The biggest expense would be travel. Presidents Council discussed fee waivers being used to recruit athletics. The fee waivers would still count as FTE. We would also have to implement some sort of student fee and create a boosters club to help raise money for the athletics program. Campus Champion Dr. Killpatrick is interested in creating a campus champion and would like John Rice and Erik Seastedt to establish some guidelines. He would like to recognize a campus champion once per year at the Presidential Award Ceremony. Miscellaneous Dr. Killpatrick reported that the COW bus Classroom on Wheels is having funding problems and has approached GBC to see if we would like to get involved. Perhaps we can somehow tie this into our child center as an enrichment program. Mr. Diekhans reported that the Quilters Guild would like to hold their gathering during Spring Break 2006 on the GBC campus. They would be doing a national advertisement that mentions GBC and would like an aerial shot of the campus to put in the ad. Mr. Diekhans stated that this group is one of the best groups hes ever had to deal with for an event held on campus. Presidents Council agreed to the request, since it is one year out. Mr. Seastedt stated that an email will be going out notifying employees that they will no longer be required to use their social security number as an employee number. A new employee number has been generated for employees and social security numbers will no longer be used. Each employee will get an advisory letter with the new number. Mr. Seastedt commented that the email regarding free show tickets in Las Vegas for UCCSN employees is legitimate. Mr. Seastedt reported that the Computer Use Policy is now a pop up whenever you sign on to a GBC computer. You must read the policy and agree to the policy before you can get onto the system.
